The individual was okay with my instructions and did as I asked. Without warning, when her boyfriend opened the door to leave she ran out the door in the cold behind him with no shoes on her feet. I called to her for her to come back but she continued to run after him and, because my coworker cannot move as quickly as the individual my coworker was unable to follow her. The individual ran in the direction of number nine bus stop because that’s where her boyfriend had already gone. When I reached the bus stop the individual was fighting an arguing with her boyfriend to come back to her house.
I called to the esidence and another staff came to assist me. I let my coworker know what strategy we were going to use to get her back to the residence My coworker approached the individual and spoke quietly, explaining to her that it was cold outside and she would get sick because she didn’t have any shoes on her feet. She started screaming and cursing and ran in the street in front of the on coming bus. The bus driver saw her and slowed down, I flagged to the bus driver to wait please. I told my coworker when the bus driver opens the bus door she is to guide the boyfriend on the bus and I would use intervention.
I used a technique called stand up wrap and safely laid her on the ground. My coworker successfully got the boyfriend on the bus and the bus pulled off. I continued the technique for less than two minutes until she calmed down. I explained to her that I was going to let her up so that we can return to the house. I also asked her was that okay with her and she agreed. I did a body check to make sure she was not harmed during the technique and she was okay. I followed the chain of command by calling the supervisor and nurse. Then I filled out all the paper work needed in this incident. LEARNING
These are a variety of techniques that I must attentively learn and safely carry out when using Strategies for Crisis Intervention snd Prevention on any of the individuals that I serve. I was taught to use verbal calming, to a simple touch (physical prompts) and different gestures when individuals are at interment risk of harming his/her self or others. I learned that we have to immediately separate others to a different part of the house so that the individual that’s having a behavior can have space. I know that in any occurrence the physical intervention must lead to be the last resort.
I learn to use my professional judgment at all time when observing and performing my duties as a Direct Support Professional. I have trained and obtained a position in this population for many years. Being a mother I have learned to tone down, be more comforting and compassion, when they are going through something or having a moment. Working in the Developmental Disable population is challenging. I need a lot of patience but in another sense it is rewarding. I became proud of myself for a job well done when knowing I am making a difference in the lives of people who only want to be loved. I take my job serious at all times.
I then landed a job at Mercy Home for Children in 2011, before the shift starts at work all of the staff and manager have a group discussion about what happened either the day before or over the weekend. This is done to know different strategies to use to make activities better for the individuals. I talk about therapeutic intervention, which is taking actions to better the individuals health and well-being. I talk about things I feel is good for the individuals daily living. For example, things like how did the individuals enjoy the events, how did they behave t the event; do we think that this event can be utilized again?
I also discuss things that we can do to make things better for the guys. Doing this helps me to get to know the materials, know myself , and know my surrounding that I am in; in order to have a productive day. I accompany them as a guide to a variety of different social events and activities to keep them busy through out the day. For example, I accompany the individuals to dances, Birthday parties, museums, outside concerts, fairs and festivals, etc… By doing this I know I have accomplish another task that I set forth to do.
APPROVED MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION PERSONNEL The next training is called Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP). Now this training is very intensive because it last for five days. Reading plays a major part of this training because it’s so much I need to know and I have to communicate with these procedures of administering medication. Ilearned why it is important to pay attention when you are administering medication because there is no room for mistakes. This is someone life I have in my hands when giving the medication to them, so it is very important that I take the necessary recaution and do it the proper way.
I learned that it is important to use the five rights to administering medication safely, which are the right person, the right medication, the right dose, the right route, and the right time. Medication Administration Rights is a vital thing that is important for me to remember and I know these rights are use to reduce error or harm to the individuals. Another important step I learned when administering medication is, I have to do three checks before I give the individual any medication; this is a way to ensure that the individual is safe and free from harm.
I learned to interpret irections for use of medication and documentation of prescription refills on the prescription. Ilearned the path, to receive and parts to prescriptions as well as the Dispensing Process. I also learned all about Over the Counter (OTC) drugs and other Pharmacy settings. For example, things like hospitals, drug distribution in Long-Term Care Facilities, repacking of the drugs, Unit-Dose drug distribution system, medication dispensing Units, Robotics, and “Pyxis”. I also learned all the abbreviations commonly used in prescriptions.
In this training I learned that all people don’t have equal reactions to the same edications. In May 2006 I had the opportunity to attend a workshop for Reducing the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. In 2007 I attended Kings Borough Community College for a Pharmacy Technician Certification Program where I became a Certified Pharmacy Technician all while carrying my second baby. Then I had my daughter while attending this program and had the opportunity to bring my new born to class with me.
My professor was also a Pediatrician so he didn’t mind her being there. I learned that my role as a Pharmacy Technician in communication and Customer ervice-communicating with the patient. Ilearned the Laws and Ethics of the Pharmacy as well as the Federal Privacy Requirement. I covered Entity, Electronic Signature capture, Conversion and Calculations. I learned the Apothecary System which is the system used to measure dry weight and liquids and The Avoirdupois System that is somewhat similar. I learned to record Pharmacy technician dosages and calculations along with Dosage forms.
I haven’t had the pleasure of working in a pharmaceutical company as a Pharmacy Technician, but I was able to use what I learned in the program an applied it to the ext job I landed was which was working in the Developmental populations again. PERSONAL As a Direct Support Professional my goal aims to help individuals gain the knowledge and experience needed to function independently. In this process I developed skills in Critical thinking and have the ability to provide competent and compassionate care to a diverse population.
I am raising three mischievous young ladies and I am training them to become wholesome adults. I learned to value the quality of life because you can be born with any thing or things can happen tragically. As I act as a care giver to the individuals that I serve it give me trength to meet them where they are in their needs. Doing this field of work made me become and active participant in my own education and life long learning. I’ve gained importance of my inter-subjective relationship to a professional development. I emphasize on self development and self-awareness.
I gained knowledge that being a Direct Support Professional, I give assessment and treatment to individuals responses. I believe teamwork will make the dream work. I know that I am skillful Professional on all levels, positive and a well organized problem solver. I am a true task seeker who is passionate when ommitted to a common goal. I am a leader, listener, as well as a Team player with strong Customer Service skills, who tackles tasks with enthusiasm and diligence. I have excellent communication skills, self motivated and possess a strong desire to excel.
Iam proactive in determining the needs of the people that I serve, and accomplish needed task. I work well in high pressure environments, skilled at being organized, efficient and can prioritize effectively in order to accomplish departmental goals that exceed expectations. My trainings and counseling experiences sharpened some of my strengths – mpathy and compassion for people that has made me the person I am today. This time I worked in a residence with all girls. They were there to be prepared for Independent Living and Housing. One of the girls worked hard to get the chance to live in her on place.
I help them to pursue the ability to function normally in today’s society. I assist with therapeutic activities by demonstrating how dance, art, music, and social activities are a benefit to people with developmental disabilities. They do this by participating in music therapy, art therapy, spending their afternoon playing relaxing, and learning social skills. I ncountered another incident while sitting in the activity room observing. The individual was in the activity room with two other individuals and I. She was sitting looking at her favorite book.
I know that this is her favorite book because she goes for it every time we enter the Activity room. Suddenly, she jumped up, turned over the chair and ran to the cabinet where she punched the glass and it shattered. I called for assistance and asked the two other individuals to go to the dining room where the other staff was with the rest of the residents. My co-worker came and escorted those two out and came back to assist me. then asked the individual to sit to that I could look at her hand. The individual continued to jump and hit the wall with this same hand.
I continued to speak to her softly, asking her to stop and sit for a moment. After two minutes she finally sat down and I took a look at the small cut of her hand. I cleaned it, there was no further bleeding, and I asked her would it help if she took a shower to relax. The individual came with me to do this. There were no further redness, bleeding or swelling noted. I informed my supervisor and nurse of the incident—the area where the glass shattered was cleaned and vacuumed. After being out of college since 2000, it took me thirteen years to decide to go back.
I went back because my sixth grader at the time, came home with some homework that I couldn’t help her with that’s when I realize that I needed to go back to school. Therefore, I enrolled in to Lehman College in 2013 to finish studying Accounting and gain more knowledge and help to help my daughters achieve. I developed core values, which wasn’t an easy task working in the population; but I managed it by time, patience, teamwork, some disagreeing, care-compassion, trust, and respect. These are my everyday living tools.
