Population refers to the total number of organisms inhabiting in a particular area. The rapid growth of population in certain parts of our planet has become a cause of concern. The population is commonly referred to the total number of people living in an area.

On the one hand, it is an ideal number for scientists to study, and the data we collect is extremely important to understand current human-environmental problems. On the other hand, it can produce some difficult and controversial conclusions regarding certain social and political issues.

In the past, most researchers relied on historical data collected by the United Nations to estimate population statistics. In many countries, such as the United States and Japan, data gathered by government agencies are heavily biased in favor of the population at large.

Using numbers like population (in millions) and the number of births per year, these agencies can estimate populations and population growth rates and sometimes even population sizes.

Unfortunately, such agencies are usually subject to the same kinds of problems such as falsification when using their data, and thus their estimates of population often depend heavily on the sources listed on the United Nations website.

However, with these problems, population growth is now relatively rare. Population growth in developing countries is actually very much higher than in the developed world, suggesting, perhaps, that populations in these countries could actually be growing faster.
