Electoral college

The Electoral College is an electoral body that is selected by political parties in each state to elect the President of the United States. The Electoral College has been created since the Framers were cautious to give the people the right to elect the President directly. They believed that the people were not properly qualified to elect the national leader. The Founding Fathers also founded the Electoral College as the compromise between a parliamentary vote and a popular vote. The presidential elections were a series of state elections, leading to a national candidate.

The College consists of 538 citizens, divided into States by the number of representatives in the House, plus 2 votes in each of the members of the Senate. Electors are selected by the political parties for each state. To elect the President, a majority of 270 electoral votes is required. Article Two of the Constitution states: “Each State shall select, so that a number of electors may be guided by the legislative term of that State, the total number of Senators and Representatives to which the States may be entitled in Congress.”
