Stephen Hawking started his studies at Cambridge University. He began to study cosmology but later then realized that was not the path he wanted to go down. Eventually he became a professor of theoretical physics. By the age of 21, Hawking contracted ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a neurological disease that is incurable and very fatal. ALS eats your nervous system very slowly. From then until now, Hawking has defied this disease and is still alive to this day. Hawking has a family, and three grandchildren.
In the first article, it states “For the first time, Stephen Hawking turns his gaze inward for a revealing look at his own life and intellectual evolution”(Harmon). Life may be different physically for him but he is still full of life. Studying and finding ways to not only slow down the disease, discover mathematical equations for black holes, but Hawking has had many more accomplishments during this journey. While researching about Mr. Hawking, there has been articles that describe in detail of his specific case.
Although he is confined to a wheelchair, Hawking has and continues to surprise the public. Stephen Hawking is the best renowned physicist that has ever come from Britain. In the article it states, “ Life expectancy turns on two things: the motor neurons running the diaphragm—the breathing muscles. So the common way people die is of respiratory failure. And the other thing is the deterioration of swallowing muscles, and that can lead to malnutrition and dehydration. If you don’t have these two things, you could potentially live for a long time—even though you’re getting worse.
What’s happened to him is just astounding. He’s certainly an outlier”(Harmon. ) Along with, “ It is just an incredible, incredible example of the variability of the disease—and the hope for patients who have it that they could also live a long life. Unfortunately, it is a small percentage of people for whom that actually happens. ” Hawking contracted ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) right after his 21st birthday and he had just recently turned 75 years old. Astoundingly, Stephen Hawking has lived for his long with no complications.
Within the same article, it states “In spite of being wheelchair bound and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication Stephen Hawking continues to combine family life (he has three children and three grandchildren), and his research into theoretical physics together with an extensive programme of travel and public lectures. He still hopes to make it into space one day. ” Hawking has had an incredible break in his luck with this disease. His disease seems hardly to have slowed him down. Hawking has spent 30 years as a full professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge.
And he is currently the director of research at the school’s Center for Theoretical Cosmology (Harmon). He should have died many years ago and not found the information for his studies. Fortunately, Hawking has had all the time to finish his studies and build onto his theories. Along with figuring out the mathematical proof for the black hole, another source states, “Stephen Hawking has won many awards and honors such as Pius XI gold medal for science. He has also won the Albert Einstein medal.
Stephen Hawking was awarded Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth the II in person. If Stephen hawking was not the best, why would he get so much recognition? All of the accomplishments that he has made was made through hard work and dedication. Hawking created a computer so that he could communicate with people and continue to be somewhat independent. Hawking states in a lecture he gave, “ A tablet computer mounted on the arm of my wheelchair is powered by my wheelchair batteries, although the tablet’s internal battery will keep the computer running if necessary. ” Having something to allow him to still converse and work in society is very beneficial for this physicist.
Hawking says, “I keep looking into new assistive technologies, and I have experimented with eye tracking and brain controlled interfaces to communicate with my computer. However although they work well for other people, I still find my cheek operated switch easier and less fatiguing to use. ” His mind works so indifferently while he comes up with his theories. There is much work to be put into what he is trying to portray through his illness, that he has to have other resources to get what he needs to say out into the world.
Hawkings biggest dream was to go up into space one day. Since he is still alive and remotely mobile, there has been some talk in the media world that he might actually get to go to space. A reliable source informs the media that in 2015 Richard Branson is going to take Hawking himself into space. Interviewing astronauts on the great professor one of them says, “Professor Stephen Hawking is one of the people I admire most in the world, an undisputed genius who has opened our eyes to the wonders of the universe, while also happening to be a kind and delightful man.
He is the only person I have given a free ticket with Virgin Galactic, and he is signed up to fly as a Future Astronaut with us if his health permits it”(Branson. ) Not only is he 75 years old, but having such a detrimental disease may bring up complications with the trip to space. The closer the time gets to launch the more crucial the preparation will be. “Traveling to space, of course, is risky business, even more so when health concerns come into play. Now, it seems that Hawking is set to go.
Hawking’s voyage to space will also give scientists an opportunity to study the effects of ALS in new ways, such as how it operates in zero-gravity. ” Says one of the attendants. This is not just one of Hawking’s aspirations. He also wants to encourage young people to live out their dreams and not let anything stop them from going to the gold. Another reporter says, “In Hawking’s interview with Good Morning Britain, he focused on the importance of the unifying power of space exploration, especially in terms of bringing together governments from across the globe and inspiring future generations.
Being able to say that Hawking has won all sorts of awards, made world-wide theories, discovered things in space, and is still able to communicate and have a family with this fatal disease is more than amazing. The fact that Hawking has dedicated his life to science along with his family says a lot about his character and why he should get the amount of recognition and respect he deserves. While being incarcerated in a chair for the rest of his life, Hawking has made an effort to keep striving for answers and new discoveries.
Articlelist Sarah Marquart says, “In short, the things that we invest in (whether that is sports, or war, or science) are a direct reflection of both the values that we hold and the society that we are currently building. And as is clear from this revelation, Hawking truly believes in going where no one’s gone before—or at least, only a very few people. ” She believes as much as any of the public does that Hawking is out to do something great. Stephen Hawking has fought through such an intense battle with ALS, along with proving his theories and his studies.
The struggle to have searched and found the information he needed to collect for the Black hole had taken months. By being employed at cambridge and having such an interest in space, it is like he had never worked a day in his life. Mr. hawking is very fortunate. For most people who have had the privilege of getting diagnosed with ALS, usually do not live to be this old. Although he is not healthy, Hawking may be one of the luckiest people who have gotten this illness. Hawking has been so successful in his lifetime that there are 8 books written to honor him.
His many publications include The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime with G F R Ellis, General Relativity: An Einstein Centenary Survey, with W Israel, and 300 Years of Gravity, with W Israel. Among the popular books Stephen Hawking has published are his best seller A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, The Universe in a Nutshell, The Grand Design and My Brief History”(Hawking). These are some of the publications Hawking has had made about him. Being the best renowned physicist may be exhausting, but Stephen Hawking has made the most of it.
