Most factories have done this by exploiting women and children, because they may earn less payments than men with no consequences. The workers employed, particularly women, were subject to very tough working conditions. They were exposed to terrible working conditions including sweatshops, which were poorly lit and ventilated for optimum efficiency. They were forced to work in unsafe environments, where a person could easily be mutilated, or even killed if they mistreated their equipment.
It was unheard of that employees would work up to 16 hours a day under threats of fire or even physical assault if they did not complete their work at high speed. And after all their efforts on the job, it was not unusual for a person to be paid for their daytime work as little as a single dollar. During the 19th century, these poor working conditions led to trade unions promising fair working conditions for all workers. The trade unions helped to ensure health and fairness at work by using a large number of people to push greedy businessmen in the correct direction.
