Where is hope? What is hope? Desmond Tutu said, ‘Hope is able to see that there is light, in spite of all the gloom.’ He murmured, ‘You are going to conquer this misery.’ This trusts us by reminding us, ‘life is going to change.’ Many people experience more of these unpleasant signs than others. Nevertheless, we can overcome problems with hope.
Hope gives us the power to overcome suffering and depression caused by tragedy, maybe an sudden job loss, when your boss, calling you up into his office on a Friday afternoon after a long period of work, says: “your shot.” Maybe an unexpected end to a marriage. If you try to make love, your wife weeps in bed. She turns to you and says, “I can’t live anymore with you.”
To have hope, in the face of fear, to allow your light to burn, and march on in hopes of finding a better place, requires perseverance.
