During some interviews and surveys I coordinated, I asked the following question, how have groups like CDC and Doctors Without Borders been important? Bob Bollinger replied with, “These groups are very important and help communities manage health issues locally, which saves lives and also helps reduce the risk of these diseases in the US. ” Jeremy Youde stated, “All three are very important, though they do different things. Doctors Without Borders is a non-governmental organisation that provides a lot of on-the-ground medical care for people in bad situations.
The CDC has incredible research capacities and a strong track record of being able to trace the origins of disease outbreaks. WHO has the authority and legitimacy to bring the world’s governments together to address a wide range of health issues. ” To add, William Checkly wrote “WHO HAS TAKEN ON THE ROLE TO PROVIDE GUIDELINES FOR DISEASE DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THIS INCLUDES NOT ONLY VACCINE PREVENTABLE DISEASES BUT CHRONIC DISEASES AS WELL. THEY ALSO BRING ATTENTION TO IMPORTANT PROBLEMS INCLUDING EPIDEMICS AND OTHER HIGHLY PREVALENCE DISEASES.
Shakuh Patel wrote, “They provide aid to many people who are not able to afford healthcare. ” Yogen Patel states, “They help provide aid to sick peopl around the world. Also, they reduce the risk of lives lost when they are helping. ” Anushka Sharma answered with, “They have been important because they help people who can’t get help and to help stop the spread of diseases before it becomes really bad. ”
Vanshika Malhan stated, “They learn about the diseases and try to find a vaccine for it. In a primary document named “Appendix 1 – World Health Organization; Mission Statement”, the mission statement states “To assist Governments, upon request, in strengthening health services: To stimulate and advance work on the prevention and control of epidemic, endemic, and other diseases: the improvement of nutrition, housing, sanitation recreation, economic, or working conditions and other aspects of environmental hygiene” Another primary document is shown to the right (see figure 4).
The photographer, Juan Carolo Tomisi, took this in 2013 during his duty for Doctors Without Borders in Africa. In the book “World Health Organization”, it states “The main goals of the World Health Organization are set out in its constitution. WHO aims: to help governemnts improve their healh services, to encourage people worldwide to meet and agree on health matters, to fight diseases, to encourage scientific groups that work for health to work together” [Powell 5], “The smallpox virus wiped out in the 1970s by WHO’s immunization program.
[Powell 7], “WHO staff members include medical and public health experts, nurses, chemists, economists, translators, editors, and accountants. ” [Powell 11], “WHO is funded by fixed contributions from its members and by voluntary donations from governments. ” [Powell 12], “The main contributions are made by the United States, Japan, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The United States contributes 25% of WHO’s budget. ” [Powell 12], “When there’s an outbreak of an infectious disease, WHO can send field workers on site within 24 hours.
These health experts can set up quarantine measures to stop the diseasefrom spreading, train local staff, and investigate where and how the disease is spreading” [Powell 13], “WHO also supports local projects, such as constructing tsete fly traps in African villages.. ”[Powell 14], “WHO funds research into new drugs for malaria…measures such as bed nets soaked in insecticide…” [Powell 15], & “Since 1984, WHO has worked with the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers to fight AIDS by researching and developing new drugs and vaccines for the HIV virus. [Powell 25].
Addtionally, the book “Doctors Without Borders” states, “Others such as Amnesty International and the International Red Cross , work to protect people’s human rights or provide for their basic needs in times of conflict and disaster. ” [Parry 4], “There are two main areas of activity for Doctors without Borders: Quick help in emergencies, such as during a natural disaster or conflict, Longer-term health care programs for people affected by diseases such as tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS. ” [Parry 11], “Doctors without Borders’ work is Dangerous.
Volunteers have no right to compensation for themselves or their families other than what the organization can afford. ” [Parry 10], “2001- The HIV/AIDS pandemic- Doctors without Borders starts providing special therapy that lengthens the lives of people living with AIDS in seven countries. ”[Parry 13], “2003- Doctors Without Borders opens a free clinic for HIV/AIDS patients in Xiangfan, China. ” [Parry 13], “Diseases like HIV/AIDS are very expensive to treat. There are millions of people throughout the world who cannot afford to buy the drugs they need to prolong their lives.
Doctors without Borders provides treatment, counseling, and health education to communities affected by HIV/AIDS. ” [Parry 21], & “With wars increasing around the world, many more civilians were also suffering. The French doctors who had worked in Biafra knew that many people had died because aid organizations could not reach them. ”[Parry 21]. Next, the article named “The USA should increase funding to fight disease in developing nations”, proves “the Global Fund has spent 21. 7 billion US dollars…the Gloal Fund have saved an estimate of 6. million lives through providing AIDS treatment for 3 million people” [Idea] & “So far the United States has provided a third of the Global Funds contributions…Obama promised to increase the funding for the Global Fund.
Currently the US donates 1. 05 billion US dollars annually” [Idea] Additionaly, the article “Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) Working in Global Health” states, “The Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), World Bank, WHO…” [Fogary]. All these organizations are ones what help global healthcare.
Also, in the article named, “How The US Helped Fight The Global AIDS Epidemic”, it states “By the end of May 2003, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief or PEPFAR, was a law” [NPR], “PEPFAR prevented 740,000 infants from getting infected with HIV at birth. ” [NPR], & “I think PEPFAR, really has solved a huge number of people’s lives…one of the most effective publuc health inventions outside of clean running water, decent nutrition and vaccine prgrams. This has made an unbeliveable difference. ”- Dr. Francois Venter [NPR].
Not to mention, the article “CDC: 5 ways diseases from other countries can kill you”, states “CDC and the Department of Defense have pledged $40 million to expand to 10 additional countries in addition to the pilot projects in Uganda and Vietnam. “ [CNN] Moreover, in the article named “US Safer When CDC works with other countries to fight infectious diseases”, states “CDC and Vietnam have resulted in improvements in disease detection and response that may serve as a model for increasing global health security in the rest of the world” [CDC].
In the article “World spends more than $200 billion to make countries healthier”, one of the sentences state, “Among the organizations who channel this funding, the African Development Bank and UNICEF expanded their funding in 2014…WHO; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: Gavi: the Vaccine Alliance: and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation spent more than in 2014 than they did in 2013” [IHME] Not to mention, in the book “Battling and Managing Disease”, some facts include, “Part of the Public Health Service, it was founded in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center to fight malaria and other contagious diseases.
As its scope widened to polio, smallpox, and disease surveillance, the name changed to the Center for Disease Control and later pluralized” [Rogers 27], and “Countries with such unstable healthcare infrastructure often are dependent on aid form international organizations” [Rogers 29]. To add, in the article “The US Government and Global Emerging Infectious Disease Preparedness” states “WHO often plays a central role during disease outbreaks, serving as a hub for communication and an organizer of the international response.
[KFF], “United Nations Food and Arguculture Organization (KAO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). ” [KFF], “HHS coordinates U. S domestic health surveillance, preparedness, and resonse efforts with those of other countries’ [KFF], “USAID…, to be prepared for outbreaks, including pandemics…many of USAID’s global health programs (like many CDC global health programs) support general health systems strengthening in developing countries” [KFF], and “Multiple USG agencies support activities to prevent, prepare for, detect, and respond to EIDS. [KFF].
Not only that, but in an article named “AIDS fight: 7 organizations making a difference” states “Global Fund, Center for AIDS Research, UC San Diego, UNAIDS, The Elton John AIDS Foundation, Treatment Action Campaign, The Rush Foundation, AmFAR. ” [Global Post], “The Global Fund has taken a big step forward in implementing the new funding model.
This new funding model will make our grants even more effective and capable of achieving real impact”- Simon Bland [Global Post], “We’re offering treatment almost universally. ” – Dr. Richman [Global Post], and “When it comes to tackling this pandemic, we think new, disruptive perspectives are most likely to be the game changes we need. ” – The Rush Foundation [Global Post].
