From Village Community to City-State To understand our where we came from: we must look into the past. Humans have always needed the bare necessities of food, water and shelter to survive. In chapter 2 of Howard Spook’s World History, we examine how primitive men lived simple ways of life. However, perhaps because of harsh weather or overpopulation, these early people were forced to move to a place that helped supply the demands of a greater population and supplied more food.
From the tiny caves, came the beginning of a new home, a village. These villages provided new positive ways of life, People began farming and domesticating animals. They also made tools used to support their new agricultural way of life. They even began making pottery to preserve and transport food, perhaps also as a way to Identify their village. This was also the beginning of marketing and trade. This period was known as the New stone Age. The first culturing villages discovered by archeologist are located in the Fertile Crescent in Middle Eastern Iraq.
When the villages began over populating, hence began the development of City- States. One of the first city-states was located In Mesopotamia, which was inhabited by the Sumerians. With the development of a city, new elements were boor New innovations and technologies included the creation of brick/clay walls. The inhabitants invented irrigation systems for cultivating, water systems that supplied water and even new transportation systems that to the Invention of the wheel. They also made new weapons and tools made of Iron and metal that would later be known s the Bronze Age.
City life also brought about a bureaucratic structure and the placement of government and law. There were new labors set in place to meet the demands of the more complex and sophisticated society. There were Armies formed for protection, traders, merchants, priests and kings. And although life was no longer relaxed and harmonious as when people lived in the small villages, the new way of life brought organization and development. There was economic growth, water systems, monetary systems and the TLS writing system known as Pictogram.
Although many cities did not succeed, they have lasting impact on how we live life today. For example, these primitive people opened the door to capitalism and the importance of law and Justice, to the establishment of religion and temple, to living in an organized hierarchy way of life.
