In the novel 1984 the party also known as the government in the novel demands loyalty to Big Brother. Totalitarianism is a system of the government that is dictatorial. Totalitarianism requires complete loyalty to the government. The party seeks to control everything. The goal of the party is to control the citizens and manipulate information. They manipulate information by erasing, recreating, or modifying the truth in history. The citizens of Oceania are not allowed to keep written records of their lives, anything that pertains documents of their lives must be destroyed in a memory hole.
The party also monitors the behavior of its citizens they are not allowed to love their families because all love should be for Big Brother. The power the party has is to control the present by altering the past. If the people do not cooperate they use the military to perform tactics to get the rebellious people to love Big Brother. In the novel 1984 the party (government) employs totalitarianism and general manipulation to control and have absolute power over its citizens. In the book their is a teenage boy that stops taking his pill and starts to get his memory back and tries to save the world by making the elders realize there’s nothing wrong with feeling emotions.
This refers to 1984 because the party has control over the people and will ot let them have freedom to love or be like normal modern families. Jucovy writes about her experience and thoughts after reading 1984 and Archer Goon. She said that she loved the novels. Although the author of Archer’s Goon did mimick the surveillance tactics and the slogan of Orwell’s 1984. She says that the novels actually did have politics and stuff about the government being bad in them. The abuse of political power was much more heavy in 1984 but more easy to obtain than in Archer’s Goon. The importance to the party’s goal is to destroy family. Most outsiders and citizens believe some tactics are very cruel but Kotkin argues that their not only trying to make a political statement but trying to enforce a set of values. Ricard explains how race had nothing to do with the mass urdering of people in the Soviet Union. Totalitarianism hasn’t even been linked to the rule of the Soviet Union in that time. It was not welcomed and still is for the part that is left. Although socialists weren’t against it, they weren’t all the way with it. The term genocide was not used by Soyinka because murdering masses of people ,meaning anybody meant they had total control. This refers to 1984 because they party was willing to get rid of anybody that went against the grain. By doing so they were putting fear in the citizens and cleansing leaving Big Brother with total control.
