A crowd of American colonists gathered outside the Boston customs house on the cold night of March 5, 1770. A snowball struck Private Hugh Montgomery by a colonist. Montgomery addressed the crowd with a round. It prompted the rest of the British Army troops to murder five civilians in an event known later as the Boston Massacre (Foner and Garraty). After the protest, more and more taxes, particularly on tea, were imposed on the colonies. In addition, commerce with nations was banned in addition to Great Britain.
The tarring and plumage of British tax collectors and the notorious Boston Tea Party met such affronts. As a result, Massachusetts was effectively ruled by martial law. This ended with the Second Continental Congress declaration of independence on 4 July 1776. The United States of America has been created. Each American, including our founding fathers, needed more protection of their rights because of British colonialism. To do this, James Madison drew up the Charter of Rights and by the end of 1791 the first ten amendments had been adopted by all States. The first amendment is significant not only because it is at the forefront, but because it articulates the first right and the essence of the rights.
