Vengeance, greed and jealousy may all disturb society. In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Claudius and Commodus, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, all are disrupting the social order induced by their greed for success that inevitably results in the death of both people. First of all, the greed and pride in the cruel people blind them to the true truth. Finally, both Claudius and Commodus must make every attempt to attain and retain their positions. Firstly, envy will drive Commodus and Claudius into a machiavellian disposition to attain grandeur.
Before Marcus Aurelius ‘death, he said he wanted him to become Rome’s next emperor and to bring Rome back to a republic. The reasoning behind this is that “‘Your shortcomings as a son are my weakness as a father'” (Marcus Aurelius). Everything Commodus needs his father to be loving and to embrace him as who he is. Marcus also praised Maximus for his own son. As Marcus prefers Maximus as the emperor of Rome over his own son, Commodus is furious. It made Commodus a evil villain.
