My Thanksgiving vacation could have been more enjoyable. I did a lot of working over break. Starting from the beginning, on Tuesday after we got let out of school, I drove all the way down to Des Moines because I had to work. I work at the Des Moines Buccaneers Hockey Arena, it’s a USHL hockey league that boys from ages 16-19 play in while trying to get scholarships to colleges they are signed to. My sister Kaylee and I worked in the Pirates Cove cleaning until around 7:00 P. M. Buccaneer clothing can be purchased in the cove.
We had to close down and quit cleaning at 7:00 P. M. because an important hockey game called the Turkey Cup. Between two Des Moines high school hockey teams, the Oak Leafs and the Capitals. On these teams the boys age from, 16-19, although they are the same age the boys that play for the Oak Leafs or Capitals are not as serious about making hockey a career for them. We stayed to watch the game and it ended as a good one. It got over about 10:00 P. M. After the game we met up with my boyfriend Trevor to go eat dinner at On the Border, we also went and saw the movie Night Before Christmas.
After that Kaylee and I went back home to relax and get some sleep before our big day on Wednesday. Kaylee and I had to be back to the Bucs Arena on Friday by 8:30 A. M. on Friday. The Black Friday sale started at 9:00 A. M. 9 to 11 everything in the cove was marked 20% and 11 to 1 everything in the cove was marked 10%. The 10% off went through the night for the game, but we closed down the cove at 1:00 P. M. so Kaylee and I could have a break.
We finally left the cove to go to lunch around 1:30 P. M. We went to eat lunch at Wasabi Chi, we ate with my cousin Stephanie and her dad Steve. I ordered the Out of Control Roll and Japanese Chicken Fried Rice. The roll has ingredients such as: spicy tuna, crab, cream cheese, jalapeno and shiso, lightly fried and served with sweet and spicy sauce. The Japanese Chicken Fried Rice is just lo mein noodles, their homemade sauce, and chicken. We finished eating lunch around 2:30 P. M. Kaylee wanted to stop at Unkl Ruckus because it happened to be just right down the road from Wasabi Chi.
We finally got back to the Bucs Arena about 4:00 P. M. Then we swept and mopped the floor and got everything in the cove ready. At 4:30 P. M. we had to go into the locker room to make sure every player had a towel, shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Usually, the away team already showed up to the arena, so we have to ask Stertsey to go in and check the supplies for us. By 5:00 P. M. the players had started to show up, once we get everything done they can start changing into their warm-up clothing. We opened the cove at 6:15 P. M. so the public can buy things.
Although the game does not start until 7:05 P. M. they start letting people in at 6:15 P. M. so they can find their seats and any food or beverages that they want before the game starts. Throughout the game Kaylee and I took turns watching the game. We would stand down by the players locker rooms are, that way you can see everything going on throughout the entire ice. It was a very close game in the first period, no points on the board for either team. Although one player from Green Bay did get his face smashed into a foam rail and got both of his top front teeth knocked out.
The blood went everywhere, when he first stood up you could not really see anything. After the referee got out of the way, the ice was all covered with blood, but since the color of the ice is white you could not see his teeth. The grossest part probably that his teeth were not actually knocked completely out, they busted off about right at the gums. More excitement came within the second period, we scored three goals in less than 5 minutes of game time. The score, at the start of the 3rd period, was 3 to 0 with us in the lead.
Our goalie, Juan Ruzicka is from the Czech Republic and he cannot speak any English. Although everyone thinks he’s so good, we have not won a single game at home or very few away games with him in goal. During the third period, we gave up three goals. The period ended 3 to 3 and we went into overtime. Only ten minutes into overtime they thought Green Bay scored, but when the referees discussed the play, they decided that the player actually hit the puck in the goal with his hand. In the end it did not matter because we lost the game 4-3 anyways.
