Gastric Surgery Research Paper

How do the American people feel when their country is called one of the most obese countries in the world? What happens if someone wants to lose weight but can not do it? Some people try to start and keep an exercise routine and either can not keep up with it on a daily basis or can not work out because of medical issues. Some people also try to diet and get into a nutritional eating routine, but sometimes they forget or stray off of their diet plan. Well, these types of people should look into having weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery.

It might be a little costly and take some time, but the effects this surgery will have on the patient will be great and life long. This type of surgery almost guarantees weight loss as long as some easy steps are followed and rules regarding their post surgical eating habits. There are a few types of weight loss surgeries, but they all result in the same outcome: drastic weight loss. There are some qualifications that are needed to be met in order for people with weight problems to be a candidate for weight loss surgery.

If they meet these qualifications for weight loss surgery and do not have the ability to be on an exercise routine and to be on a nutritional diet plan, then this might be the right option for them. This procedure will help with these problems and help them lose the weight they have always been trying to lose. Their obesity problems will most likely be a distant memory. Weight loss surgery is a safe method to aid severely overweight people in fighting obesity. In order to actually start going through the process of having weight loss surgery performed on a patient, there are many qualifications that need to be met.

It may seem all that is needed is to be obese, but medical professionals have devised an intricate list of qualifications to ensure this type of surgical intervention is the best choice. One of these qualifications is the patient’s BMI, which stands for Body Mass Index. The person interested in going through this process needs to have a BMI of 40 or above, which could range from 200 pounds to 400 pounds depending on the height of the patient. This category is called class three obesity, or morbid obesity (“Weight-Loss Surgery’).

This is just one of the qualifications that needs to be met. This qualification is just to know that if his or her weight meets the qualification for having this surgery. If this is not met, then the person is not obese enough to go through this process. This person should try other methods rather than surgery. Having already tried all possible ways to lose weight is another qualification that needs to be met (Wright). The person trying to get weight loss surgery done needs to try all weight losing methods, like dieting and exercise, before being able to get weight loss surgery.

Someone would have to vouch for the patient so the doctor knows that he or she has tried to lose weight by other methods. One more qualification is that the person needs to commit to having long-term medical follow up as needed from the doctor, which is part of the agreement made during the preoperative meetings (Wright). To make sure that the patient does not regain the weight, they should meet with their doctor once or twice a year to make sure that he or she is not regaining the weight he or she lost from surgery, and for research purposes.

It would be upsetting to see that someone paid to lose weight, and yet cannot just follow what his or her doctor is telling them to do. Once these and other qualifications are met, the person will start going through the process of weight loss surgery. When people go through this process, the number one thing people worry about is safety. Safety is a big concern when it comes to surgery. Everyone is always nervous about what happens if the doctor does something wrong when he or she is under anesthesia.

There is no reason to worry because this process goes through a lot of precautions and preparations and they will explain to you what is the best option to do, and how they will do the surgery they choose to perform on the patient. Dr. Jim Harris, A general surgeon who has done weight loss surgeries since 2002, said in regards to what happens in the preoperative meeting before surgery is that “I talk about weight loss surgery, how they are performed, what the risks are, and the benefits. We talk about average weight losses and what it takes to succeed long term.

He explains to his patients everything they need to know about how the surgery is done, what is right for them, and any other things he or she wants to know. This would make the patient feel a lot less stressed about the surgery because they can see that the surgeon is a very informed and smart doctor. Complications with surgery can be worrisome as well. But as long as an early diagnosis is made, the complication will not evolve into something worse (Hernadez). So, any complications that happen should be able to be stopped and aided as long as the complication is diagnosed in a timely manner.

These are just some of the safety precautions that are taken to make sure the surgery goes well. As long as the surgery goes well, there are a multitude of benefits that go along with this process. One of these benefits is that eighty percent of people who have type two diabetes who go through weight loss surgery get more control over their blood sugar level after surgery (Harra). This shows that most obesity related health problems can be conquered if weight loss surgery is done. Another one of the many benefits is that patients will tend to live a longer life (Wright).

Because of being obese and having obesity related health problems, these people will tend to live less than average healthy people. Once this is changed because of surgery, the patient will become the healthier person her or she wants to be. And along with being healthy, comes a longer life. All these benefits come with weight loss surgery, and there are three main types of weight loss surgeries that can accomplish this goal of giving all these benefits to the patient. There are many ways weight loss surgery can be performed, but there are three main types of weight loss surgeries that are practiced today.

These three types of surgeries are Gastric Bypass, Gastric Banding, and Gastric Sleeve, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy. The first one of these surgeries that were performed was the Gastric Bypass Surgery. This type of surgery was first done in the 1960s. It was considered the “gold-standard surgery” (“Weight-Loss Surgery’). This is still used today, which shows why it was considered the “gold-standard surgery. ” How this surgery is done is that the upper stomach is converted into a pouch that is the size of an egg and is rerouted to another part of the digestive system (“Weight-Loss Surgery”; “Gastric Bypass Surgery’).

This would cause you to eat less food and help with the after surgery weight loss effect. The next of the three main surgeries is Gastric Banding Surgery. This surgery was approved by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2001. It was popular for about a decade, but is now rarely used because of the other two main types of weight loss surgery (“Weight-Loss Surgery’). It was used a lot in the decade that it was popular, but has just lost popularity over the years because of finding better ways to perform weight loss surgery, but this is still a good method to use.

How this is done is that the stomach size is made into a small upper chamber with an adjustable band to limit the patient food intake (“Weight-Loss Surgery). Having this adjustable band can come with some benefits that Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve can not offer. One of the benefits that comes with this type of surgery is that this surgery is reversible, while the other two main types are irreversible (Franco). So, if you start to get sick because you are not eating enough or you just do not feel good, the band can be taken out.

Another benefit of this surgery is that weight loss is about one to two pounds a week, which helps the patients achieve their healthy selves a lot faster (“Realize”). This is very good fro the patients because they will be able to lose the weight they want to lose very quick. The last of the three main types of weight loss surgery is Gastric Sleeve Surgery, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy. This type of surgery is a new type, and it is taking over the weight loss surgery world by storm. The way this surgery is performed is that the stomach is changed into a tube that looks like a banana.

Eighty percent of the stomach is removed through this procedure (“Weight Loss Surgery’). This makes you eat a lot less. Your proportion become very small and you become full a lot quicker. The way this surgery came about is very interesting. In order to know how this surgery came about, the history of this surgery needs to be known. Before this surgery was designed, it was all about Gastric Bypass Surgery and Gastric Band Surgery. This was actually first developed as a first step procedure for extremely obese people that seemed to make Gastric Bypass Surgery on themselves too risky (McCue).

It crazy to think that one surgery created another surgery. Now in recent years, data has showed that the results from the surgery are so great that they are equal or better than the other the other two surgeries (McCue). This shows how far this surgery has come and how effects of this surgery are outstanding. The number of times this surgery has been performed has being increasing over the last ten years and now makes up 70 percent of weight loss surgeries performed (“Weight Loss Surgery’). This shows how this surgery is taking over the weight loss surgery world by storm.

This surgery is starting to replace Gastric Bypass Surgery (“Weight-Loss Surgery’). This “gold standard surgery” is starting to be replaced with this surgery. So, if this surgery is very popular, then it must have some great benefits. By the Gastric Sleeve Surgery having some great benefits, its popularity is rising. The benefits of this surgery do include the general one, but there are some specific ones that go along with this surgery. One of this surgery’s many benefits is that there is less concern about nutritional deficits and long-term complications (McCue).

Because the stomach becomes a tube, patients tend to eat smaller portions, which leads to having less complications about the stomach tube stretching and not being able to absorb the nutrients he or she needs. Another one of the many benefits is that this surgery is a minimally invasive approach (McCue). This means that less problems can occur when the surgery is taking place. This also leads into that the patients will recover very quickly from surgery (McCue). By the surgery being minimally invasive, less incisions are made, which will lead to the patients walking, breathing heavy, eating, etc. uch quicker.

One more of the many benefits is that this surgery does not touch your intestine (“Gastric Sleeve Surgery’). This makes the surgery safer because less of your digestive system is being touched, and the patients’ recovery times are much quicker because less of the digestive system is being touched. These are just some of the great benefits that go along with this surgery, but the real question is how effective really is weight loss surgery. The way people can tell if weight loss surgery is effective is to look at the weight change in patients, and how they do with their after surgery life.
