A Quintessential Operation of the World Abortion is defined as, “any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion” (Abortion: Some Medical Facts). This definition gives a very unbiased scientific definition of the word abortion. However many people associate a negativity with the word or act “abortion”.
Many people believe it to be evil from a moral stand point and cannot not see themselves budging on what is right and ring concerning abortions. Nevertheless abortions are as much a part of modern society and for several reasons are beneficial to society as a whole. On January 22nd, 1973 The US Supreme court recognized woman’s right to freely choose abortion and declared a Texas law that prohibited all abortions unconstitutional. This was decided in the abortion case of Roe vs. Wade.
This case decided that, “the states were forbidden from outlawing or regulating any aspect of abortion performed during the first trimester of pregnancy, could only enact abortion isolations reasonably related to maternal health in the second and third trimesters, and could enact abortion laws protecting the life of the fetus only in the third trimester” (Bride). This ruling is in strong favor of protecting individual freedoms shows that abortion is a personal choice.
Laws against abortions can lead some woman to rash actions that may put their lives in danger. Access to professionally performed legal abortions will reduce injuries and deaths caused by dangerous illegal abortions. When felt it is absolutely necessary some woman will choose to have an illegal abortion in dangerous indention without being aided by a professional. “Every year, about 19-20 million abortions are done by individuals without the requisite skills, or in environments below minimum medical standards, or both” (Grimes).
Of these abortions the World Health Organization states that, “Worldwide, an estimated 68 000 women die as a result of complications from unsafe induced abortions every year-?about eight per hour” (Grimes). Abortion procedures in modern day are far more advanced compared to how they used to be. Abortions is a safe alternative that will prevent rash actions hat may put woman’s lives in danger. Abortions can even be considered to be safer than childbirth. Less than 1 in every 100,000 women who use a medical abortion die, making medical abortions safer than childbirth and about as safe as naturally occurring miscarriages” (Women on Web). Maternal Health in the U. S states that the maternal mortality rate is 13. 3 deaths per 100,000. Simply looking at the figures one can see that there is a distinct difference in deaths from medical abortions compared to live births. Abortion is necessary because contraceptives cannot be obtained easily for all women. To obtain consistent birth control methods women must obtain a doctor’s prescription first.
These methods can vary between pills, shots, patches , etc. However Planned Parent Hood states, “In fact, while most employment-related insurance policies in the United States cover prescription drugs in general, the vast majority do not include equitable coverage for prescription contraceptive drugs and devices. ” Since consistent contraceptives are not readily available to the public, abortions is a necessary part of society. Abortion gives women the choice to not bring a child with a condition into the oral. There are over 4000 different identified birth defects that range from minor to serious. Although many can be treated or cured, they’re the leading cause of death in the first year of life” (stealth). One of these birth defects is known as cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy refers to a group of conditions that affect motor control and is caused my brain damage. “Cerebral palsy occurs in 2 to 6 of every 1,000 births; about 10,000 children born in the United States each year develop cerebral palsy’ (stealth). This condition can seriously affect a child, some children with referral palsy may not even be able to swallow or speak.
It is wrong to condone a child to live a life with an acute handicap. Abortion is chosen by many women who are not financially able to provide for a child or would block them from personal aspiration. “The reasons most frequently cited were that having a child would interfere with a woman’s education, work or ability to care for dependents (74%); that she could not afford a baby now (73%)” (Finer, Forthwith, Dauphine, Sings. Moore). Raising a child can be extremely expensive even if you are only looking at the age up till 18.
Weeklies states,” it costs almost $200,000 US Dollars (USED) to raise a child from birth to age 18. Other sources estimate the cost at $250,000 USED or more. ” However that price is only looking at a healthy child. If the child is handicap it can be a much higher cost of living. These costs could come in the shape of therapy, braces, or any kind of assisted technology. A child shouldn’t come into the world unwanted. Having a child should be a decision someone puts a lot of thought and effort into. There are so many factors to consider before having a child.
A lot of people don’t realize they aren’t prepared for a child until after they have one. Gatherers Institute states that 49 percent of all pregnancies, excluding miscarriages are unintended in 2013. That’s nearly half of all pregnancies recorded in the United States. That is an extremely high number and it is very possible that many of those children will not be cared for. The association between abortion and breast cancer is not founded on hard evidence. The National Cancer Institute stated, “Induced abortion is not associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.
There are many theories that say it can cause increased breast cancer. Yet they have no solid evidence to support their theory. “Approximately 30 studies have examined the risk of developing breast cancer for women who have had abortions. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist, the World Health Organization, and major universities say that the most reliable studies show no increased risk, and they consider the entire body of research inconclusive” (Planned Parenthood). Abortion can also reduce crime.
The quarterly Journal of Economics stated, “Legalized abortion appears to account for as much as 50 percent of the recent drop in crime. ” Unwanted pregnancies bring forth more children than some families can provide for. These children will be more likely to turn toward crime if they are raised in a poverty stricken home. Abortion is a necessary tool in modern day society. It is a safe method when used correctly to help many troubled woman through a dark time. It is hard for many people including myself to imagine the gravity of the situation if avian an abortion was not available.
