In this assignment I will be discussing the influences on different dietary intakes and how it affects the health of a person, I will also recommend how to minimise negative influences in a health and social care setting. Health factors resulting in specific nutrient needs, influencing the dietary intake: The way in which you feed yourself is very important as after you eat or drink, your body breaks down the sugars in your blood and turns it into glucose. The glucose then travels through your bloodstream and gives you energy. A person with diabetes means the pancreas either is producing oo little insulin or none at all.
It can also mean that the insulin can’t be used effectively. This can lead to many problems affecting nearly every part of your body. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 and type 2. Type 1, is an immune system disorder. In type 1 diabetes, the patient’s own immune system stops the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, destroying the ability to manufacture insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes will need to make sure they take insulin in order to live. Most people who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes are most likely to be young adults or children.
Type 2 diabetes is very common diabetes which 3 million people over the UK is diagnosed with. A person with this disorder has insulin resistance; meaning that their pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body doesn’t react properly to insulin. For many people, this having type 2diabetes is less of a problem as it could be managed through doing exercise and maintaining a good diet. A balanced diet with regular meals, three times a day including carbohydrates, such as whole-wheat pasta or potatoes, in each meal is a good way in overcoming this issue.
On the other hand, aiming to do 10-20 minutes of exercise each ay will also help maintain a healthy weight and control your body glucose level. Coeliac disease is a long term issue, which is a disorder diagnosed by endoscopy of the small intestine (bowel). In coeliac disease, gluten causes the immune system to produce antibodies that destroy the bowel, which is responsible for absorbing nutrients and vitamins from food. This disease could be diagnosed to people at any age; however the most common age is between 40-60 years old.
The symptoms for this disorder can make you feel poorly but if the person is left totally untreated, this disease can lead to anaemia which is having low one solidity, osteoporosis and forms of cancer. The best way to keep away from it is by avoiding all food that contains gluten. Irritable bowel syndrome is also a long term condition of the digestive system. It can cause problems such as having diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating etc. There are many symptoms which affect some people more harshly than others.
They are more likely to come and go in periods, during times of stress, or after eating different types of food. If you have this disorder, you may find some of the symptoms ease after going to the toilet and opening your bowels. Lactose intolerance is a problem where the body is not able to digest a type of sugar mainly found in dairy products called lactose. The symptoms are diarrhoea, bloated stomach, feeling sick, stomach rumbling, cramps and pains. They usually develop within a few hours of having food or drink that contains lactose.
A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts in an unusual way to specific foods. Although allergic reactions are often harmless, they can become very serious. Symptoms of a food allergy can affect different areas of the body such as vomiting, itchy red ashes, swelling of the face etc. Almost any food can cause an allergic reaction, but there are certain foods that are responsible for most food allergies such as milk, eggs, peanuts, and fish. A person who has allergies to these ingredients will have to avoid eating food containing the ingredients.
This may affect their diet as it could mean that they are not taking in enough nutrients however they will need to find ways in which they do. Loss of ability to feed independently is a disease which could lead to losing physical ability, digestive system or cognitive ability. When this happens to someone, the person is likely to be ed through a tube as their body either cannot swallow or be able to feed themselves. However this does not stop their bodies from receiving nutrients as the food still is going into their body, just in a different way.
Overall, diabetes, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Lactose intolerance, food allergies and not being able to feed yourself independently all tend to effect a person’s dietary needs as their disorder stops them from being able to take in the nutrients needed which will have a major impact on the person and their diet. Dietary habits A meal pattern is when someone chooses to eat, in some cases eople eat three times a day which is breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst others may have a different routine depending on how often they get hungry.
Snacking is when you have small portions of food/drink between regular meals. This can have both positive and negative sides depending on sugar and salt levels. For children who get in the habit of snacking have the risk of facing obesity which is the condition of being very fat or overweight. Food availability also has an impact on the diet. For example if someone had they choice of having a fruit and junk food, they are more likely to go for the junk food. Making wrong decisions on what you eat especially if you’re a fussy eater is important as you may not take in the correct amount of nutrients your body requires.
Lifestyle influences Having the opportunity to eat at home allows people to have a choice on what they want to eat; it gives us multiple choices to whether we want to eat homemade meals or to cook a readymade meal. The proportion off readymade food has increased as it does not need cooking, meaning that people are most likely to go for the readymade foods rather than cook it at home wasting time. However there are bad sides to readymade ood as you can never be sure of what’s in them, they are expensive and they make you very lazy. Another influence on a person’s diet is occupation.
Managing a busy and ongoing day will cause less time you to prepare food therefore they will be taking readymade food which will have an impact on their diet as having no time to prepare food means that they will be going for readymade food which is usually full of fat. Social eating and drinking also has an impact on an individual’s diet as you are more likely to buy food which will not make your diet healthy any longer as they will contain a high proportion of fat, salty, nd sugary foods. Another factor which influences a person’s diet is exercise and activity levels.
Someone who is active in their daily life means that they need more food in their diet as they burn off food quicker than a person who is less active. Economic influences: People who receive low income are more likely to buy food which is cheap than to go for food that is expensive. This means that the price of food has a major influence on what people buy and eat. The food which contain high-fat and sugar are the ones which are more likely to be affordable therefore are suitable for people who receive low income. Another economic influence is the access to shops.
A person who has difficulties walking long distances or doesn’t like to travel far will go to a corner shop as it would be quicker to access what they need meaning that the prices of products may be higher than usual. Socio-cultural issues also has a big impact on a person’s diet as the parents in the family is more likely to choose the food that will be cooked for dinner before the individual can choose what they want to eat in terms of food. This could be due to religious reasons as every culture has their own type of food they prefer to eat.
Education influences Public health monitors the health of people by providing them clear information about the preparation and cleans of their food when they are in a public setting. It helps see and monitor shops, restaurants, schools and any other places which provide the public with food so that they are safe to eat. The public will observe and decide on whether they place is hygienic enough to give food to people. Once the public setting is observed, it will shut down if the place is considered as non-hygienic for certain amount of time for it to be improved and made sure that the setting is appropriate to be preparing and providing food to people.
