What Is The Change In The DUFF Movie

Describe how a character changed in the film. Change. It is a natural and unpreventable yet terrifying part of life. For teenagers, such as Bianca Piper in the 2015 film The DUFF directed by Ari Sandel, change is overwhelming, confronting and often surprisingly rewarding. Sandel effectively presents Bianca’s changes through the use of parallel structure, appearance, facial expression, body language, music, and costume. Parallel structure is used to show the difference in costume and personal appearance of Bianca in the opening scene and the closing scene. in the opening scene Bianca was wearing boots and masculine jeans.

By the closing scene Bianca was wearing high heels and dress. The change of costume indicates to the audience that Bianca has more Self confidence in herself. we also see parallel structure being used in the mall when Wesley told Bianca to say “I could tell from across the room that we might be into each other. ” This dialogue was also used in the homecoming scene when talking to Wesley in an over the shoulder shot. “The purpose of this is to show how Bianca has improved her self confidence and changed her way of thinking by changing her appearance through costume.

In the closing scene Bianca is walking in the middle of her friends down the hallway compared to her walking along the side in the opening scene. This change shows the audience that she is more important (and is not the “DUFF” (Designated ugly fat friend) as well as her being more confident towards others as well as taking pride in her appearance. This scene is to emphasise how Bianca has changed into a new confident person and takes pride in her appearance and doesn’t seem to hold grudges against what others say about her. This technique also indirectly relates to teenagers as they often get bullied in school.

The director wanted us to see this because tennagers always take advice from movies as sometimes they might find it hard to approach someone in person (to talk about their issues). As Jess,Bianca and casey entered the Homecoming dance the music was in a medium to low volume and as Bianca and Wesley came into contact the music got louder. This is to show that Bianca is an important person to Wesley. Through this we can see that Bianca has changed, this is shown when Bianca was walking in the middle of Jess and Casey whereas in the opening scene Bianca was walking along side jess and Casey this is parallel structure and composition.

Bianca was noticed by a lot of people especially Wesley who was mesmerised by her new appearance. This is to show how important she is and how wesley thinks she’s a more attractive person. The music replicates the loud feelings wesley has towards Bianca. This is a common technique used to keep the audience in suspense in order for them to eagerly watch what happens next. The suspense is created when Bianca and Wesley came into contact of each other and the music got louder and the audience waited with baited breath to see how their relationship would progress.

This technique is to show how popular and attractive Bianca has become. This technique is also used to emphasis how Bianca and Wesley feel towards each other. As this technique doesn’t relate to us directly as no one would turn the music louder when two people meet each other, but it’s still a great technique to emphasis each others feelings. The director wanted to show how Bianca has changed into a more confident person and tell her feelings to her crush. We see facial expression displayed when Bianca walked into homecoming and saw Wesley she had a more confident look on her face.

We see she is confident as she is making eye contact with Wesley and her head is tilted to emphasise the straight up way she is speaking to Wesley. The music got louder as Wessley glanced at her, his jaws dropped as he looked at her in a nice beautiful black dress. As Bianca and Wesley were talking to each other, we see this through an over the shoulder shot . Madison saw Bianca and Wesley together, she finished her conversation with others and walked towards Bianca in an angry mood. we see this when Madison rolls her eyes about what Bianca say ands she looks to Wesley for approval over her negative reaction.

We also see that Madisons eyes look towards the floor when Bianca says negative comments about her that she know that are true. in order to claim dominance over Wesley. We see that Bianca’s facial expression didn’t change much, she looked assertive and continues to make eye contact with Madison as she confronts her. This scene was shown through the use of two shot and over the shoulder shot. This is to show how Bianca reacted to Wesley and Madison. Bianca remained to maintain eye contact with Wesley and Madison to tell how she feels towards madison, we see her telling this to her in an assertive way.

The purpose of these two shots are to show how Wesley is attracted to Bianca and how they both truly feel towards each other. we see this shown in the homecoming dance. we also see that wesley is more comfortable with Bianca rather than Madison, this is shown through wesley’s facial expression. The director wanted to show how happy Bianca is and how she’s changed into a newer person and is more confident to approach other people compared to in beginning of the movie where she wasn’t comfortable wearing high heel and sexy clothes like the other girls in the school .

Another reason why the director wanted us to see this because tennagers these days are scared to approach new people as they don’t know how they would feel towards them. This teaches us the importance of moving out of our comfort zones. If Bianca hadn’t been brave she never would have ended up with Wesley and Madison would have continued to treat her badly. In the homecoming scene when Bianca and Madison are arguing, while Bianca is speaking we see that Madison is denying everything that Bianca is saying by rolling her eyes. Madison is not really having a say in this argument.

This shows that she has a negative body language showing hatred and unfriendliness by placing her hand on her hips. The purpose of this is to show the maturity differences between the three characters especially Madison and Bianca. we also see that Madison is insecure with Bianca and Wesley going out. She feels that by Bianca and Wesley going out it will ruin her popularity in the school also which indirectly means that her rank is lower than Bianca, and she does not want this to happen under any circumstances. This is to emphasis how popular and attractive Bianca has become.

Bianca has become more confident compared to the beginning of the movie, this is shown through body language when she was afraid to ask toby out, whereas now she’s being straight up when talking to other people. The director wanted us to see this as this relates to the outside world. In reality we find out how other people feel towards us verbally and visually through body language. we find out if a person hates us or ignores us if he or she ignores you and rolls her eyes similar to what Madison did to Bianca in the Homecoming dance Bianca has become more open minded and confident.

We see Bianca’s new confidence through many techniques but especially dialogue when she says “we might be into each other to wesley in the homecoming scene. ” This new confidence shows us that Bianca gets straight to the point whereas in the early stages of her practicing to say these pickup lines she couldn’t get through three words. By the dialogue being repeated in the two scenes it reinforces the previous scene to the audience and makes them realise that how Bianca has changed and become more confident. Change. It is a natural and unpreventable yet terrifying part of life.

For teenagers, such as Bianca Piper. Change is overwhelming, confronting and often surprisingly rewarding. We see that Bianca has become more open minded and confident compared to the early stages of the movie, when she was afraid to talk to her crush Toby. In the beginning of the movie, we the audience would think that Bianca is the type of person who wouldn’t have enough courage and self motivation to change to the person she is today. This motivation and courage of Bianca has made the audience to think twice on their thoughts of social benefits and relation towards other individuals.
