School Internet Censorship: Protected or Freedom? As of 2013, 71 percent of the United States population age three and over use the internet on a daily basis (“Fun Facts”). This time allows people to look at anything they want. They can find almost everything and anyone within minutes. They can steal identities, make bombs, and find anyone’s personal information at any given time. Many of the people that use the internet are children and teens. Children and teens should know internet safety to protect themselves, especially since you can find almost everything on the internet.
Many students are given a device to work and complete assignments during and out of school. As students they should not be looking up inappropriate websites or searches during school. When students get their devices, most schools have a technology use agreement form for the students that use technology at school have to sign the form saying that they understand the rules. A parent usually has to read the rules and sign the form also. This gives students the opportunity to have freedom and trust using the technology at home and in the classroom.
In order to succeed in the classroom, students need restrictions on technology to keep them focused, and not using harmful websites toward each other and in work. School internet restrictions keep students on track in the classroom. It allows them to use the devices in the classroom and be protected while doing work. It makes the students have easier homework assignments, but also requires them to have internet access at home to do the assignments at home that they do not get done at school. Technology makes learning in the classroom easier. It also gives students many different resources to use in and outside of the classroom.
It helps them know what they need to be doing and not doing something wrong. It gives them multiple resources to use in and out of the classroom. The technology is very helpful, but it does need rules and restrictions. The filtering system that schools have for the internet makes sure they are on track most of the time. The technology department can check up on all the students at all times. They can make sure that they are not looking up things that are inappropriate while doing class work. A student using school technology has great responsibility and trust from teachers.
Teachers can use web programs to use to make the students aware of missing assignments or assignments they missed when they were absent. The technology should have restrictions that way it decreases the risk of failing due to messing around with it and not doing work that is assigned. School internet censorship is very helpful when it comes to sex trafficking and pornography. Controlling the internet will lessen the victims and punish the violators (“11 Chief Pros and cons of Internet Censorship’). Students are blocked from using sexual websites or related searches on school technology.
This keeps them out of trouble and safe. The internet contains personal information and harmful information to many students. Students could have another classmate’s personal information within seconds. That means that within seconds any bad, harmful person could have this information. Schools need to use the internet censorship the way students are completed protected on the school grounds while being at school away from their parents. Students could be victims of sex trafficking and pornography at any time of their lives. The censorship can decrease the amount of this happening on school grounds.
The school internet restrictions are good for students because it keeps them safe from bad things happening to them. It also protects them from harming someone else. The restrictions give students the internet safety that they need. Parents send their children off every day to school, having no control over who protects them and what they are protected from. Parents always want their children to be safe. As parents are trying to provide for their children, they do not have the time to teach their children about internet safety and what they think about what should be done on the internet (“11 Chief Pros and Cons of Internet Censorship”).
As information is quickly collected and posted on the internet, parents are usually unaware of the situations. They are also unaware of what are can happen when using the internet. Children can become victims of sex trafficking, pornography, identity theft, and much more. Students could be violated in many different ways on the internet. Parents do not have the time to be checking up on their children all the time. The school internet safety makes it where students can not post anything or see anything inappropriate while being at school or on school technology.
Since parents want the best for their children, they internet safety can increase their protection and well being. Most students are aware of many peer pressuring activities. Younger students may not be aware of all the illegal activities. Many older students are more aware of the activities that are illegal to perform outside of school. Older students can have a great influence of many of the younger students. If the older students would be looking up how to perform illegal activities, it is most likely that the younger students would follow. The younger students would not know that is was wrong.
The older students could look up activities that are illegal and pressure the younger students to participate in the activities. The school filters would restrict any student from looking up illegal activities during school hours, where many younger students are with older students during this time. This would make the student body less aware of illegal activities or anything that is wrong for them to be doing. School internet restrictions make teaching in the classroom easier. It allows teachers to have valuable resources to teach and use as examples during the lectures of the lesson being taught.
Teachers can allow students to incorporate technology into their everyday work in the classroom. It ensures that students are staying on task, but provides freedom with technology use. It it way easier for students to be able to use the technology as a resource. It also give student a break for carrying around heavy book bags with every subject having a textbook for each assignment. It provides teachers to have a wide variety of web pages and other useful internet sources. They do not have to worry about students using inappropriate sources. It keeps students in line on their assignments and gives them fun activities to do in the classroom.
It easier for teachers to teach subjects that require examples. The internet censorship gives teachers the opportunity to teach harder subjects and know that they students are not looking up inappropriate things while being taught in the classroom. School internet censorship decreases the risk of cheating in the classroom. Students can not use the same papers or copy off other papers because they do not have any work to copy off of. It blocks them off of certain websites and searches that students can use to cheat off of when doing their work.
The risk of cheating would decrease in the classroom if teachers were educated more about the internet (“Johnson”). Teachers also can make the students take tests online, the censorship would block them from opening other windows while taking the test. It can also block answer sheets and websites that other students posted the answers on for public use. Many filters require a bypass to look at all answer websites. freedom from students. Many people who argue this will say by making it a law, it violates the first amendment which is freedom of press, expression, and speech (“11 Chief Pro and Cons of Internet Censorship”).
However, many students and people would argue this, internet censorship would protect students from harmful situations and problems. It would give them a great educational experience and give common knowledge for many life experiences that students would need to know. It blocks students off of websites that they do not need to be on during the school day when they need to be focused on their education. Here many proponents of internet censorship would probably object that it would create problems between the school and students.
However, many students are old enough to make their own decisions and express themselves freely. Many of the students do this through the internet and social media. (“Censorship in Schools Pros and cons List”). Students argue that the blocking off social media and other websites is unnecessary, but it keeps them under control. The censorship allows prevents bullying and the spread of rumors, which is why it is much needed. To improve succession in the classroom, students need to stay focused, and use the internet filtering system to keep them off of harmful websites and sources that they can use against other classmates.
Multiple reasons are given out in the world to use the internet censorship to keep students safe and on track educationally. The government should enforce the law of internet censorship as it does not affect freedom of speech. It keeps them off of harmful things during the school day, as they can still access these things outside of school on their free time. School internet censorship can decrease the risk of bullying. Many suicide cases have been cause by anonymous people that spread information quickly on the internet (“The Advantages of Internet Censorship”).
People can use the internet to promote violence is disturbing ways. Slander is posting on the internet about someone and it is not true. If someone pursues in the action of slander they can be charged, and convicted. There are websites out there that will give advice and provide methods of suicide to users. (“The Advantages of Internet Censorship”). No one should be able to access these horrific websites. There are many websites out there that try to prevent suicide by communicating knowledge and help out the public with their problems.
Many students should not be able to access the bad websites. They should be allowed to live their life as long as they can without doing anything that the internet gives them advice on. School internet censorship reduces plagiarism. Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own. Many students do this on a daily basis even though it is illegal. Teachers do not always know what is happening in the classroom. They assign homework and expect students to be honest with their work.
Some teachers use websites to submit assignments because the teachers can go back and see if the student copied and pasted or used a previous assignment. Students usually do not want to do their work, so they will doing anything to get the assignment done faster. If they do not get caught they earned a good grade without doing the work compared to someone doing the work and getting a fair grade. The student would also have put in the time, work and effort. The other student would just have to copy and paste, and then claim the work as theirs. A common argument against this position is it takes away
