Anyone on a clear liquid diet is doing that due to medical procedures such as surgery, having the flu, or sometimes other stomach disorders until they can go on solids again. The clear liquid diet is only that: foods that will go down easily and don’t require a lot of digesting. The clear liquid diet helps the person on it to stay hydrated enough for the body to function, and also provides you with electrolytes that are needed as well. This type of a diet is usually for the shorter term until whatever ailment it is becomes corrected.
The following foods is what a dietitian at he hospital will recommend or else your doctor: You can have clear water and any fluids such as fruit juices and Gatorade for the initial period of starting to heal from whatever ailment. Taking a sip every 2 to 3 minutes is best, slowly allowing the fluid to get into your system. Any broths, bouillons, or consumme are also recommended. Eat slowly taking as long as needed to settle. Soda pop is good for an angry stomach. Be sure that the soda is at room temperatures and not cold though.
The cold hitting the stomach is liable to make you vomit. Try plain gelatins. These are really soothing for the stomach and set well in a touchy situation. Tea or coffee straight is fine. Just don’t add creams since the milk may cause you to vomit. Adding some honey might be good. This diet is rather blah but it will keep your system working and hydrated until you are able to handle more solid foods. When you do start back to solids again, have foods that are easy on the stomach such as some soups with vegetables in it. Make sure the soup is not creamy but broth based.
As you get back into your more normal eating routine, go slowly. You should avoid foods that are heavy with pices or anything deep fried. Nothing is more upsetting to the stomach than those two things. Be easy on dairy products. You should avoid these for a few more days after getting back into your normal eating plans. There are many dairy foods that may cause you to have diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Another good gentle way to get back on track after only eating liquids, is to use what doctors fcall the BRAT diet. This means bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast which means dry toast.
This diet gives the bowels and intestines a chance to heal if you have had a flu bug that has caused diarrhea. Dieting is a common topic that covers the front pages of nearly all the magazines at the checkout. Unfortunately, we know that most of these don’t work – or if they do, they only work for a short while. Almost all these diets share the same mistake. They force you to transfer to their choices of foods and have you sacrifice almost everything you enjoy. When you look at these diets next time, think this – Could I do this FOREVER?
Sure I can eat oatmeal for breakfast, twigs for lunch, and a slice of bread for dinner, but COULD I DO IT FOREVER? A month maybe – but forever? The answer is obviously NO! That is why diets fail. You can choose any diet you want, but while doing this, keep the snacks. Here’s the catch. You need to limit them and this is easier than you think. First of all, let’s do away with the snack machines at work. This is also easier than you think. Take all the change out of your purse or pockets and remove all the one-dollar bills. Leave these at home everyday. I repeat – LEAVE YOUR CHANGE AND SINGLES AT HOME.
That was easy and you could do this forever. Here’s why. If you love chocolate for instance – go to the store and buy bag of snack-size chocolate bars. My favorite is the Kit Kats. Each one of these double-stick bars has only 74 calories and about 3. 5 grams of fat. If you ate one or two of these a day, you would never suffer that dreaded chocolate binge that comes after two weeks of dieting. Maybe you want to pack two of these to bring to work or eat one at home and one at work. The snack machine will still call you, but it won’t be due to chocolate withdrawals.
If you love donuts, chips, or cookies, you will need to do something very tricky and you MUST follow these steps. First of all, go to the store and buy whatever it is that you love and don’t worry about getting those 100-calorie packs or the reduced fat ones. Remember, you are going on a diet that you can continue forever. Go ahead and get those Oreo double- stuffs, Doritos, and donut holes. While you’re at the store, buy some Zlploc snack bags and sandwich bags. Now, don’t open these snacks until you are totally NOT HUNGRY. Maybe first thing in the morning would be good if you don’t crave snacks at this time.
Now usually, the snack size ziplocs work the best for whatever you are packaging. You need to open the package of cookies and prepackage ALL of these cookies into “2 cookies per Ziploc. ” Do the whole bag leave nothing behind. Do the same thing with the Doritos or chips. This will sound corny, but if you lay the chips flat inside the snack bag (yes, one at a time – the bags are small), you can fit between 9 – 11 chips per baggie. It sounds like very little, but after a week or two of your stomach shrinking, this will be totally sufficient. Prepackage all the donut holes into two per baggie also and leave none behind.
If you take a baggie of chips to work along with another pre-bagged nack of your choice, the candy machine will be HISTORY. If you still suffer from problems of willpower and you have a supportive spouse, have your spouse hide all your prebagged snacks and make sure he/she leaves you one of each baggie everyday. It will be then up to you how you want to spread these throughout your day. AGAIN, MAKE SURE TO BRING NO POCKET CHANGE WITH YOU ANYWHERE. Please give me feedback and let me know if this helps. I personally reduced my calories to under 1500 per day which included three REAL snacks per day such as Doritos, chocolate, and Chips Ahoy.
