Some people have a personality trait called “grit”. Angela Duckworth defines grit as the determination to do something until you have obtained the skills to do it correctly. In her research she explains that one must have endurance to complete a race. In True Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis -winkler, the example they give of true grit is,” At the starting line it is the hare who is expected to finish first. Sure enough, the hare quickly out spaces the tortoise, accumulating so great a lead that he lies down to take a nap mid -race.
When the hare awakens, The tortoise , who all the while has been laboring towards his destination, is too close to the finish line to beat” (paragraph 2). This shows grit because the tortoise himself, and everyone watching thought he had no chance of winning, but he had the determination to finish the race and he won. A mindset is something you can change which makes it a belief. People can have one out of two mindsets, a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe in something and you have no room to change.
When someone has a fixed mindset they are not welcoming to developing their intelligence. Carol Dweck shows an example of fixed mindset in Mindset : The New Psychology of Success, she implies, “If you have only a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character – well, then you’d better prove that you have a healthy dose of them. It simply wouldn’t do to look or feel deficient in these most basic characteristics” (paragraph 2) Having a growth mindset means that you are willing to change your intelligence to achieve success. Basically you have the urgency to learn.
As an example of growth mindset, in, Mindset : The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck, Dweck states , “Things like a poor grade or a rebuff from a friend or loved one – these are not fun events … Yet those people with the growth mindset were not labeling themselves and throwing up their hands. Even though they feel distressed, they were ready to take risk, confront the challenges and keep working at them”( paragraph 15). This show growth mindset because a person and I give up even though they got a poor grade they decide to keep on working so they could pull that grade up because they know they could.
Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare in which Othello has secretly married Brabantio’s daughter , Desdemona. Later Othello is tricked by lago which now he believes that Desdemona is cheating on him with cassio . Othello therefore believed Desdemona was unfaithful. By the last act of the play , lago kills Roderigo and Emilia , his wife . Also Othello stabbed himself and ended up killing himself. In the play Othello there are several characters that show signs of grit and/or fixed and growth mindset. Othello shows grit and he has a fixed mindset. Iago shows grit .
Desdemona also shows grit and has a growth mindset. Cassio shows grit as well and has a fixed mindset. Othello shows grit because he is determined to prove that his love for desdemona is real and he did not do witchcraft on her to make her fall in love with him and marry him. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare , Othello states, “Most potent, grave , and reverend signiors, my very noble and approved a good masters: that I have ta’en away this old man’s daughter, it is most true; chew I have married her. The very head in front of my offending hath this extent, no more.
Rude am I in my speech, and a little blessed with the soft phrase of peace; for since these arms of mine had seven years’ pith, till now some 9 moons wasted , They have used their dearest action in the tented field , And his little of this great world can I speak more than pertains to feats of ( broil) and battle. And therefore little shall I grace my cause in speaking for myself. Yet, Buy your gracious patience, I will around unvarnished tale deliver of my whole course of love – what drugs, what charms, what conjuration, and what mighty magic (for such proceeding I am charged withal) || want his daughter”( 35).
Othello is pleading his case to the Duke and the senators to prove he did not bewitch Desdemona. Othello also shows a fixed mindset because when lago told Othello that Desdemona was cheating on him with Cassio he believed that it was true and he had his heart set that she is a whore. In the play Othello , William Shakespeare , Othello states, “Was this fair paper, this most goodly book, made to write “whore” upon ? What committed ? [ committed ? O thou public commoner, I should make very forges of my cheeks that would to cinders burn up modesty, did I but speak thy deeds.
What committed ? ] Heaven stops the nose at it, and the moon winks; the bawdy wind that kisses all it meets is hushed within the hollow mine of earth and will not hear’t. What committed ? ” (199). Othello basically told Desdemona she is a whore. At first Othello was looking for all the proof to see if the rumors are true. lago shows grit because he is determined to ruin Othello and Desdemona’s relationship. In the play he goes to Desdemona’s father, Brabantio , and tells him how Desdemona and Othello have married.
He also put a bug in Othello’s ear that Desdemona is cheating. He also shows grit because he was successful with his goal of ruining their marriage by putting a lot of effort in planning his ideas. In the play, Othello, by William Shakespeare , lago states,” Call up her father. Rouse him. Make after him , poison his delight, proclaim him in the streets; incense her kinsmen, and, though he in a fertile climate dwell, plague him with flies. Though that his joy be joy, yet throw such chances of vexation on’t as it may lose some color” (11).
Desdemona shows grit because even though Othello doesn’t love her no more she still tries to stay in a marriage with him. Even though she knows he wants to kill her. She also puts effort towards proving her innocence. Desdemona shows a growth mindset because in the beginning of the story she didn’t really understand how someone could be jealous. But by the end of the book she learned what jealousy can do after lago convinces her husband , Othello , that she was unfaithful. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare , Desdemona states, “ Believe me , I had rather have lost my purse full of crusadoes.
And but my noble Moor is true of mind and made of no such baseness as jealous creatures are , it were enough to put him to ill thinking” ( 153). As she discovers jealousy she has to understand why was he jealous and what events has occurred to lead to this . Cassio shows grit because he was really determined to get his job back. He asked the clown if he can talk to Desdemona for him. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare , Cassio states, “Prithee , keep up thy quillets. There’s a poor piece of gold of thee.
If the gentlewoman that attends the (General’s Wife ) be stirring , tell her there’s one Cassio entreats her a little favor of speech wilt thou do this ? ” ( 113). Cassio has a fixed mindset because he would not believe that the whole rumor situation was his fault. A fixed mindset a growth mindset said both have advantages and disadvantages. When you have a fixed mindset you are constant which means you remain the same you had the same thoughts and beliefs. When you have a growth mindset you were willing to change grow and her progress and your mindset has changed.
It is when have learned to increase your intelligence. Throughout the hospital play multiple characters showed traits of grittiness that have a lead characters to their deaths dealing with jealousy and fixed mindsets. Some characters in Othello like Cassio may have shown both fixed and growth mindset . To accomplish grit one must have stamina and effort to reach one’s goals. One must have determination to finish something. As Angela Duckworth once said one goes after their goals as if they were running a race.
