“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who continues to learn remains young.” I assumed I was too old to return to school for years. For the previous 20 years, I’d worked in a job that offered good financial stability but lacked passion. When I was let off, I decided not to go back into business; instead, I began my path of becoming a successful counselor and motivational speaker.
College will provide me with the knowledge and resources needed to complete my goals. It’s been said, “Success is a journey, not a destination.” College will put me on the right path towards success. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of people in their fifties enrolled in college, graduate school, or technical school is expected to increase by 2015. I am proud to be a part of this statistic. We can’t look back and say what we should have done; we’ve got to move forward and make the most of what we’ve got now. On June 6th, I attended DePaul University’s School for New Learning Graduation Ceremony.
It was bitter-sweet because I realized how much I enjoyed being a student; however, it motivated me to continue learning and expanding my horizon.

The second day of classes was dedicated to the graduation ceremony. Tecora Rogers, a 59-year-old Masters Graduate, addressed the graduating class during the commencement address. While I wish I could convey her entire speech, the following is what I remember most: “For years I’ve worked in a corporate setting, promoting other people’s ideals. At a certain stage in my life, it’s vital for me to promote my own beliefs about my community.” She seemed to be addressing me specifically.
