Computer games were first played around the world in the 1970s, while violence began about 20 years later in the games (Anderson and Bushman 354). Some of the first violent video games were “Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Wolfenstein 3D,” which at the time had amazing effects (Anderson and Bushman 354). Wolfenstein 3D was the first big video game to offer players a chance to fire from the point of view of the first person (Anderson, Buckley and Gentile 5).
Over time, developers of video games have made the games more violent, graphic and informative. Such violent games are open to everyone irrespective of age (Anderson, Buckley and Gentile 6). Owing to the popularity of video games, most children spend most of their time playing games, not going out to play or doing anything useful to do. The average play time in video games has risen in recent years from ’19 hours a year per person in 1992 to an estimated 44 hours per year a year in 2001′ (Barton). Indeed, a child with TV and video games in his / her room is very popular and consists of approximately 54% of all children (Barton).
