Thinking as a hobby is not something that everyone enjoys, but it can be very rewarding. For some people, thinking is a way to relax and escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. It can be a form of entertainment, or even a form of self-improvement.
William Golding once said, “Thinking is one of the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.” Thinking requires effort and concentration, but it can be very rewarding. Those who enjoy thinking as a hobby often find that it helps them to better understand themselves and the world around them.
Thinking can help you to see things in new and different ways. It can challenge your assumptions and help you to question your beliefs. Thinking can also be a great way to relieve stress and tension. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or stressed, try taking some time to think about the problem at hand. You may be surprised at how much better you feel after taking some time to think things through.
“How do you think?” is a question that many people ask. William Golding has sorted thinking into three distinct levels of thinking. I believe that Golding’s aim with this narrative is to get the reader to subconsciously place themselves in one of the mental styles. To assist the reader, Golding explains each stage of thinking in detail before moving on to the next level.
The first grade of thinking is what Golding deems the “primitive stage”. This stage of thinking consists of people who have no imagination whatsoever. They are people who think in a very simplistic way, and only about things that they see or hear. People at this stage are also extremely gullible, and will believe almost anything they ‘re told.
The second grade of thinking is what Golding calls the “common sense” stage. Thinking at this level is still pretty simple, but not as much as the first grade. A thinker at this level uses their common sense to reach conclusions, instead of just blindly believing what they are told. They also start to use their imagination more, and think about things that they have never seen before.
The third and final grade of thinking is what Golding calls the “philosophical” stage. Thinking at this level is much more complex, and involves a lot of critical thinking. A thinker at this level will question everything, and try to find the hidden meaning in things. They will also use their imagination to its fullest potential, and come up with ideas that no one has ever thought of before.
I believe that Golding ‘s purpose for writing this story was to make the reader think about which level of thinking they are at. He wants people to realize that there are different levels of thinking, and that it is important to try to reach the highest level possible. Thinking as a hobby can be extremely beneficial, and can help people to see the world in a whole new light. Golding ‘s story is a great reminder that there is always more to learn, and that we should never stop trying to improve our minds.
The most widespread grade is “Man is a social animal who likes to agree with other individuals as cows will on the side of a hill,” (Golding 220). He’s attempting to show that grade-three thinkers will go out of their way to be correct in what they’re pursuing.
Thinking is a process that we as humans use to figure out what we want or need. It is a fundamental aspect of our lives, whether it be thinking about what we want to eat for dinner or how we are going to solve a problem at work. Thinking is something that we all do, but not something that we all put a lot of effort into. William Golding, the author of “Thinking as a Hobby”, believes that everyone has the potential to be a great thinker, but that most people don’t put in the effort required to reach their full potential.
Golding divides thinkers into three different grades: grade-one thinkers, grade-two thinkers, and grade-three thinkers. Grade-one thinkers are those who “live in a world of ideas”, (Golding 221). They are constantly thinking about new and innovative ways to do things. They are the ones who come up with the new product ideas or start the new businesses. Grade-two thinkers are those who “accept other people’s ideas”, (Golding 221).
They don’t necessarily come up with new ideas, but they are good at taking others’ ideas and making them their own. They are the ones who take an idea and make it better or more efficient. Grade-three thinkers are those who “live in a world of facts”, (Golding 220). These are the people who just accept things as they are. They don’t try to think of new ways to do things, they just do what they’ve always done.
Golding believes that everyone has the potential to be a grade-one thinker, but that most people don’t put in the effort required to reach that level. He says that “most people never think at all”, (Golding 220).
They just go through life accepting things as they are and never questioning why things are the way they are. Thinking takes effort, and most people are content to just coast through life without putting in that effort. Golding believes that grade-three thinkers are the most common type of thinker, and he believes that this is because they don’t have to put in any effort to think.
Grade-two thinkers are those who accept other people’s ideas, and grade-three thinkers are those who live in a world of facts. Golding believes that most people are content to just accept things as they are and never question why things are the way they are. Thinking takes effort, and most people are content to just coast through life without putting in that effort.
Golding’s essay “Thinking as a Hobby” is a call to action for people to start thinking more critically about the world around them. He believes that everyone has the potential to be a great thinker, but that most people don’t put in the effort required to reach their full potential. Thinking is a process that we all use, but not something that we all put a lot of effort into.
Golding believes that if more people put forth the effort to think critically about the world around them, we could all be grade-one thinkers. Thinking is a fundamental aspect of our lives, and we should all strive to be the best thinkers that we can be.
