Theme Of Loneliness In Of Mice And Men Essay

Being lonely can really drive a person crazy. Everybody needs someone to be with no matter what it takes. John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men is about what it is to be human. Steinbecks story of George and Lennie, ambition of owning their own ranch and the obstacles of loneliness. Unlimitedly, Lennie the mentally handicapped giant who makes Georges dream of owning his ranch worthwhile, ironically becomes the greatest obstacle of achieving that dream. Steinbeck uses motifs, allusions , and symbols to express the feeling of loneliness through the characters in the story.
One way steinbeck expresses loneliness through the novel is by using motif. As said many times by George “guys like [them] have no family and belong no place” (Steinbeck 54 ) this expresses how lonely he really is. George does not understand what having a friend feels like even if he has Lennie because he still feels lonely. Throughout the the story when the words that had the letter “S” slurred with a hissing sound almost sounding like a snake. A snake leads to temptation as known by the story of Adam and Eve. In the story Curleys wife represents a snake because just like the snake in the Adam and Eve story, she disobeyed rules to get attention because she was lonely. Also known to be lonely is no other than Adam and Eves son Cain. Cain was a jealous brother who wanted attention and came to conclusions, to get it he needed to kill his very loved brother. And when God heard about this he wasn’t pleased and punishes Cain by marking him by scar. Cain was so embarrassed that he went and hid for the rest of his life and was lonely.
