Most farms are simple, but not the manor farm were the animals rebelled against humans and pigs terrorize and abuse power through the rest of their life. From the beginning of the farm and the revolution the pigs had the ultimate power and the other animals had no input to it whatsoever. All the animals are trapped in the situation of listening to who to follow, the humans or the pigs. In George Orwell’s 1945 novel Animal Farm, he uses allegory to criticize the corruption of the 1917 Russian Revolution ideals, condemning the leadership’s abuses of power.
The seven commandments was one of the first things the pigs id to act as humans. They learned how to write and read, while maintaining a sense of government to the farm. But latter these seven commandments go for the worse and change for the evil of the pigs, to be more human like. In George Orwell’s 1945 novel Animal Farm, the pigs Snowball and Napoleon make a sign with seven commands that show equality and fairness, but later change them to unfair and hypocritical commandments. The novel describes, “When the pigs changed the commandment from “No animal shall kill any other animal. to “No animal shall kill any other animal WITHOUT CAUSE. ”
It howed how unfair and hypocritical because once they were killing animals they changed the commandment, so nothing goes against them. It is unfair how when the pigs or dogs break a rule they can just ignore it, make a excuse, or just change the commandment to make it look like they did not do anything wrong,”(91) By changing the commandments the animals show hypocritical thereby changing that commandments the pigs especially Napoleon are because they only change the commandments once they break them.
But if another animal breaks them then they will be punished or banned from the farm. Orwell states, “My sight is failing,” she said finally. “Even when I was young I could not have read what was written there. But it appears to me that that wall looks different. Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Benjamin? ” For once Benjamin consented to break his rule, and he read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It ran: ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS. 134)
At the beginning of the novel the pigs main point of going against the humans was so that they would be equal and be more than slave. The pigs were so hypocritical because later in the novel they change the commandment from “All animals are equal” to “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”( they start realizing that they are better than the other animals because they have more power than the others. So they not doing any of their claims they are doing exactly what the humans did use the animals as slaves.
Orwell thoroughly shows how the pigs are unfair and hypocritical to the other animals. It was so clear that the pigs were tricking the others by changing he seven commandments and he did it right under their snouts. In the novel, Orwell shows the pigs lying about almost all the things they say and almost never tell the truth. Not only are the pigs lying but they are tremendously brainwashing them and using other humans and animals as scapegoats.
It is so easy for the pigs to brainwash the others because not only do they listen to everything Napoleon says, but they also believe him nd follow him when he does it. In the novel Orwell states, “The animals believed every word of it. Truth to tell, Hones and all he stood for had almost faded out of their memories. They knew that they were usually working when they were not asleep but doubtless it has been worse in the old days. They were glad to believe so. Besides, in those days they had been slaves and now they were free, and that made all the difference, as Squealer did not fail not point out,” (115).
Throughout the novel the pigs keep on lying to the other animals but they are so ignorant and do not realize it. The animals just keep on thinking to themselves that it was worse when Mr. Jones owned them because they were slaves but really not. There is no difference between Mr. Jones and the pigs, they are both using the animals as slaves. The fact that the pigs are of them is the reason why they listen and do not disagree. The animals hope disguises the fact that Napoleon and the other pigs are just playing them and that they are really using them as slaves.
For the dogs and pigs it is easy to brainwash the animals because they have no objection to anything they say and they have no voice. The pigs would also say, “”Whenever anything went wrong it became usual to attribute it to Snowball. ” In fact many of the claims begin to sound ridiculous to the objective mind. Of course, Squealer’s mission is to keep everything subjective in the minds of the animals,”(78) Snowball of one of the main leader pigs so the fact that Napoleon would use him as a scapegoat throughout the whole book was just selfish. Napoleon is trying to act innocent and blame everything on Snowball, when he did nothing at all.
Also since the other animals are gullible the pigs just brainwash hem to think that Snowball did everything and just lie to them over and over again. Every time something ever goes wrong Neolean always gets out of the picture. He is always the ones complaining and quickly to blame it on someone else. So Snowball not being at the farm was a perfect opportunity for him to blame him and use him as a scapegoat. The pigs always, no matter what situation they want to be looked at as a hero, so when there actually the villain they just try to blame it on others.
Not only boxer but all the animals on the farm except the pigs re considered the working class because all they do is the dirty work. While the pigs live being very wealthy, having everything handed to them, and people listening to their every word. Throughout the whole novel we watch as the other animals do so much labor like doing the farmwork, and building the windmill. But the only thing the pigs are doing is either eating lazily in the farm or sleeping and living luxurious in the house. Orwell clearly explains how hardworking all the other animals are in the novel, “Throughout the spring and summer they worked a sixty-hour week, and in August Napoleon announced that there would be work on Sunday afternoons as well. This work was strictly voluntary, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by half. ” (59) The rest of the animals show extreme strength and courage as they work hard a be obedient the whole book. They are the best workers and are basically slaves for the dogs and the pigs.
The pigs do not deserve the position to to the leader, he only position they deserve is something very low. The animals go through no stress to keep there mouth quiet for the whole book but still end up doing all the work for the farm. From Manor Farm to Animal Farm to Manor Farm again the pigs are using there power to change the name. Throughout the whole novel the pigs power is increasing. But the more power they are getting the more evil they are becoming to. From changing the seven commandments to using the animals till they dropped the pigs had done it. They had been cruel and unfair this entire time, without them even knowing it.
