Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been continually argued over for the past few years and probably many years to come. The main controversy is should abortion be legalized? First before we get Into the many sides of abortion we must first define abortion. Abortion Is the destruction of the fetus or unborn child while the child Is still In the mother’s womb. This can be done by almost anyone from the mother herself to back alley abortions and even to abortions specialized clinics set up for this purpose.
There are two sides to this abortion topic the PRO-LIFE which is hose who are against abortion altogether and the PRO- CHOICE or those who believe it is the woman’s right to choose if she wants to have an abortion. These two groups offer different solutions to the problem. The pro-life solution is to have the child and basically live with it. They believe abortion is not an answer. The pro-choice view is that abortion is a means of terminating a pregnancy that the mother feels is appropriate.
Although abortion is morally and ethically wrong should it be legal for victims of rape or incest who have no other alternative? Or should a woman have the eight to kill her Innocent child as a form of birth control? In this essay, I’m going to point out the strengths and weakness of Robert P. George (Pro-life) and Mary Gordon (Pro-choice), as well as my personal pollen on this Issue. Robert P. George believes that abortion should not be legalized. That It should be restricted.
He states “A pro-life advocate sees abortion as a sin against God who infuses life at the moment of conception; a pro-choice advocate sees abortion as a decision to be made in accordance with the best scientific opinion as to when the beginning of life, as we know it, occurs. (182) I believe that in the bible it does state that abortion is wrong, so Mr… George made a good point there. Mr… George, however, makes a careless statement, “Frequently, people who are not religious, or who are only weakly so, begin to have doubts about the moral defensibility of deliberate fetid. (187) Too me he is saying that Just because a person isn’t religious they are more frequent to get an abortion than someone who Is? Mary Gordon, on the other hand, believes that abortion should be legalized or that It shouldn’t be restricted. Gordon states, “It Is essential that we remember that an abortion is performed on a living woman who has a life in which a terminated pregnancy is only a small part. ” (188) I think that is a great point. That abortion is a small thing in this roller coaster we call life.
Gordon makes another going point “It seems to me that the question of late abortions should be decided case by case, and that fixation on this issue is a deflection from what is most important: keeping early abortions, which are in the majority by far, safe and legal. ” (190) I think this is a great point made. We shouldn’t just give late abortions to everyone but only to the people hat need it. When my mother was pregnant with me, she had a bad heart and was told to get an abortion. It would have been a late abortion. She refused of course but it was an option for her.
So In those kind of cases we shouldn’t Just do away with late abortions. Somebody might actually need It one day. Gordon makes a very bad point “In real life we act knowing that the birth of a child Is not always a good thing people are sometimes depressed, angry, rejecting, at the birth of a child. But this is a difficult proponents is that if we cannot look at the birth of a child as an unequivocal good, hen there is nothing to look toward. ” What I see is that if we are not looking forward to the baby, we should Just have an abortion. I believe this is wrong in so many ways.
The only time you should get an abortion is if you really need it. Abortion was not made to get rid of babies whenever you “felt” like it. It was made so the people that develop serious issues and cannot carry the baby to full term have a way out instead of dying with or without the baby. “One thing that is not hidden, mysterious, or debatable is that making abortion illegal will result in the deaths of women, as it has always done. Is our historical memory so short that none of us remember aunts, sisters, friends, or mothers who were killed or rendered sterile by septic abortion? (194) It says in the bible that abortion is wrong, and I’m a strong believer. I’m also a strong believer in doing what’s right for everyone. The mother did not know she was going to have issues. The person that possibly got raped didn’t ask for it and they didn’t ask to have a baby. We should not make abortion restricted for these main two reasons. “But because abortion will always deal with what is to create and sustain life, it will always be a moral issue. (190) No matter what I say or what anyone says, everyone is going to have their opinion.
Abortion is one of those topics you don’t Just bring up at the dinner table. Abortion shouldn’t be done at free will. There should be boundaries set into place when dealing with this issue. If someone is dying while carrying the child they should have the option to abort. If a person was forced to have sex, without consent, and they got pregnant, they should be allowed to abort the baby if they choose too. These cases are cases that are very reasonable and I believe in Pro-life or Pro-choice would agree on.
