Formal Recommendation To Purchase A New ATV

Contents

This report shows how the maintenance department can increase work efficiency.  The improvements will result from purchasing a new ATV.
This report focuses on the aspects of purchasing a new ATV to reach the maintenance departments goal.  The evaluating criteria include: rack capacity, towing capacity, ground clearance, fuel capacity, and cost.  To improve the work efficiency of the maintenance department, the 2000 Yamaha Grizzly should be purchased.

INTRODUCTION

This report recommends the purchase of a new four wheel drive ATV.  Using the internet for resources, the choice has been narrowed to two: 2000 Yamaha Grizzly and 2000 Honda Foreman ES.
Each ATV has been evaluated using the following criteria, in descending order of importance.

■Rack Capacity

■Towing Capacity

■Ground Clearance

■Fuel Capacity

■Cost

The current 1987 model ATV does not meet the new required standards for the maintenance department.  The 1987 model ATV does not have a front cargo rack and the rear cargo rack has a maximum capacity of only 75 lbs.  The towing capacity for the 1987 model ATV cannot exceed 500 lbs.  Ground clearance for the current ATV is a mere 5 in.  The fuel capacity for the current ATV is just 1.9 gal.  Table 1 (shown below) shows the standard for each criteria.

DISCUSSION

In each of the following criteria sections the desired standard for the two ATVs being compared will be stated.  The information provided for these sections was obtained from product specification guides.

Rack Capacity

The ATVs rack capacity needs to exceed 75 lbs on the front rack and 150 lbs on the rear rack.  This is to accommodate tool storage for the maintenance employee.

2000 Yamaha Grizzly.     The 2000 Yamaha Grizzly has a front rack capacity of 99 lbs and the rear rack capacity is 187 lbs(2000 Grizzly Specifications 1).

2000 Honda Foreman ES.    The Foreman has front and rear cargo rack payloads of 66 and 132 pounds respectively(Honda Motorcycles: 3000EX Engineering 1).

Conclusion.     The Yamaha Grizzly exceeded the minimum front rack capacity by 24 lbs and the rear rack capacity by 37 lbs.  The Honda Foreman ES did not meet the minimum rack capacity requirements.  Front rack capacity for the Foreman was 9 lbs under the minimum and 18 lbs under the minimum for the rear rack capacity.

Towing Capacity

The maintenance employee will be towing loads that can exceed 800 lbs.

2000 Yamaha Grizzly.     The towing capacity for the 2000 Yamaha Grizzly is 1212 lbs(ATV Source-Yamahas Grizzly 3).

2000 Honda Foreman ES.     The Foreman has a towing capacity of 850 lbs(Honda Fourtrax Foreman ES-Honda ATVs for 2000! 3)

Conclusion.     The towing capabilities of each meet the required standard.  However, the 2000 Yamaha Grizzlys towing capabilities exceed the towing capabilities of the 2000 Honda Foreman ES by 362 lbs.

Ground Clearance

The rough terrains between work sites require the ATV to have a minimum ground clearance of 7.5 in.

2000 Yamaha Grizzly.     A smooth undercarriage with 10.6″ of ground clearance carry you over the rough stuff(Grizzly Information 1).

2000 Honda Foreman ES.     The Honda Foreman ES has a ground clearance of 7.7 inches(Honda Motorcycles Models 1).

Conclusion.     Both ATVs meet the required 7.5 in minimum ground clearance.  The Yamaha Grizzly exceeds the minimum by 3.1 in while the Honda Foreman ES exceeds the minimum by only 0.2 in.

Fuel Capacity

The larger fuel capacity proves to be more efficient by less time away from the work site and more cargo space.  If the fuel capacity is larger, more time will be spent working and not refueling.  The extra cargo space will be available due to no extra fuel containers being carried.

2000 Yamaha Grizzly. The Yamaha Grizzly has a fuel capacity of 5.0 gal(2000 Grizzly
Specifications 1).

2000 Honda Foreman ES.The Honda Foreman has a fuel capacity of 3.2 gallons, including
0.7 gallon reserve(Honda Motorcycles Models 1).

Conclusion.  The 2000 Yamaha Grizzly will be more time and space efficient with the 5.0 gal fuel capacity.  The smaller 3.2 gal fuel capacity of the Honda Foreman ES will be less efficient by the previously stated criteria.

Cost

The price of the new ATV is not to exceed the maintenance departments yearly budget of
$10,000.

2000 Yamaha Grizzly. The suggested retail price of the Yamaha Grizzly is $6,699″(2000
Grizzly Specification 2).

2000 Honda Foreman ES.The suggested retail price of the Honda Foreman ES is
$6,399″(Honda Motorcycles Models 1).

Conclusion.Prices of both ATVs are below the maximum dollar amount set by the yearly
maintenance budget.  The 2000 Yamaha Grizzly costs $300 more than the 2000 Honda Foreman ES.

Rationale

After reviewing the criteria, it is clear the 2000 Yamaha Grizzly is the better
choice.  Table 2 (shown below) shows the criteria sections with standard for each, and
it shows how each ATV compares with the standard chosen for each criterion.  The features shown in bold print would satisfy the standard for the criterion.  If the table is reviewed, it will be clear why the 2000 Yamaha Grizzly is the best ATV for the maintenance department.
