Arrogance or Addiction? modern day for humans in the spotlight to fall from the top, but climbs right back up knowing the eyes of many are watching. What happens when they don’t realize they need to climb back up? That individual becomes Macbeth in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth from the 15th century, although stars like Lindsay Lohan who has been an actor and model since the age of three takes the big step forward and let the world see her build strong walls through the media. This idea is illustrated through William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and the life of Lindsay Lohan.
Lohan rew up in the spotlight ever since the age of three, having a successful career in acting she earned much more than the average adult. With the wealth and freedom that she had she made allies with Britney spears, her so called best friend. Macbeth being a noble thane in Scotland is told a prophecy that he will become king. Both Macbeth and Lindsay Lohan deal with a loss of innocence which leads to several catastrophic events in life; however Lohan realizes the mistakes she made and makes It is a common occurrence in the an effort to fix them, unlike Macbeth who does not because of is arrogance and need for power.
Lohan lose their innocence causing several life threatening events. Macbeth lost his innocence due to the prophecy told by the witches and his addiction to wanting power and wealth. Concerning his need for power in the future, he decides to kill the king, his enemy’s family, and any possible witnesses. For example, after he kills the king and sees the blood on his hands, “Whence is that knocking? /How is it with me, when every noise Both Macbeth and appals me? / will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood? / clean from my hand?
No this my hand will rather/ The ultitudinous seas incarnadine/Making the green one red” (2. 2. 64-75). Similarly, Lohan is known as a previous Disney star, grows up to meet Britney spears, an individual known to have several mental breakdowns in her life, she introduces the life of partying and drugs to Lohan, the drugs being her loss of innocence. With that her life spiraled out of control, for example driving her car in broad daylight while intoxicated: Lohan was arrested after crashing her Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Beverly hills.
She was arrested again July 24th in Santa Monica after she allegedly engaged in a car chase with the other of her personal assistant. In both cases, Lohan was found in possession of small amounts of cocaine, below the 0. 5 grams required for the more serious felony charges of drug possession.. “(Bio. com). This is important as it shows the loss of innocence, which leads each individual to failure in what they want to achieve as both characters have a primary catalyst for their downfall, a loss of innocence.
Lohan’s loss being exposed to drugs and alcohol and having the wrong people around her leading her to continuously make mistakes. On the other end of the spectrum, Macbeth also has a loss of innocence by realizing hat now that he has blood on his hands, it is impossible to wash all of it away as his bloody hands symbolize his loss of “. innocence. This also foreshadows further character development and the fact that he says his hands will further be even bloodier, this omnisciently leads to the several catastrophes in his life.
This further proves that both characters being exposed to something dark and new leads the two individuals to a life spiraling out of control. Further more, Lindsay realizes the mistakes she has made and how unhealthy her addiction is, unlike Macbeth who does not because of all the ower he had after becoming king and the arrogance that comes with his wealth. Lohan realizes that her doing drugs is deteriorating her health and she wants the same respect and assurance of people as before. This is presented when Lohan is interviewed, “..
Terribly skinny, the new blonde- bombshell’s weight seemed to have gotten out of control. Later, she admitted to making herself sick all the time and that: ‘1 knew I had a problem and I couldn’t admit it [.. ] My arms were disgusting. I had no arms”(Blake). Also shown when Lindsay realizes that she needs to push away the bad influences and etain the people that are good for her, “I have to regain the trust of people in my career that have their doubts’ and I fully respect that’ she said. ‘I hate that label and hat title [of child star gone bad].
That is not what I ever aspire to be” (Longeretta). This proves that, with all the things she has experienced throughout the tragedies in her life and hearing all these labels being fixated on her, she realized, it is time for a change. She grasped the chance to change and fixed her mistakes. This is important as this establishes the vast difference between Lindsay and Macbeth, that she can stop ruining her life by weighing the objectives in life affecting her, taking the burden of her addiction off her shoulders moreover Macbeth doesn’t comprehend the impact of his own mistakes in his life.
However, Macbeth’s arrogance and with all the power he had, he grows fond of the idea of killing others to get what he wants, not envisioning the mistakes he is making. This is shown when Macbeth brags about his life to Macduff, “Thou lost labour. /As easy mayst thou the intrenchant air/with thy keen sword impress as make me bleed. / Let fall thy blade on vulnerable crests; I bear a charmed life, hich must not yield/ To one of woman born/”(5. 8. 11-16).
This is important as this establishes Macbeth’s arrogance and how he does not realize that by saying this to Macduff , he is not fixing anything but making the situation worse as it is by bragging about his lavish life to his very own enemy. This also shows how much contrast there is between Lohan and him, as she realizes at such a young age with not as much life experience as Macbeth or wisdom, that what she did has morally portrayed her as a bad person. Contradictive to that Macbeth does not realize his faults, although he stands as king, this develops his haracter further to being rash and almost impulsive of his murders.
This proves that they are different simply from comparing each individuals life decisions and how this impacts them as a person. This is why Macbeth and Lohan are different. In conclusion, although Lindsay and Macbeth are from two completely different centuries, both Macbeth and Lindsay Lohan deal with a loss of innocence which leads to several catastrophic events in life; however Lohan realizes the mistakes she made and attempts to fix them, unlike Macbeth who does not because of his Conceitedness and commitment for power.
Many American stars go through phases of life, one of the commonly occurring are meeting new people and getting in trouble, clearly illustrated throughout Lohan’s and also Macbeths life. Macbeth’s character developed overtime as his loss of innocence occurred causing his kind pure heart to turn dark and baneful. Lohan’s personality was not much of a factor in her loss of innocence but the people surrounding her built her personality in a way for it be manipulated easily. Although mistakes and downfalls in life are reoccurring, in some cases they are unavoidable and brought on by the person within.
