Argumentative Essay: The Case Against High School Sports

The most common thing about the top leading schools, in academics, is that school is about learning first. The students from these countries may play sports too; however, it is played outside of school or just as fun games on their free time. According to the reading, South Korea is ranked 4th in the world on a test of critical thinking in math, taken by 15 year olds, behind Shanghai, Singapore, and Hong Kong. To no surprise, the United States ranks 31st on this same international math test. Although many may argue that sports should be a main focus point in high school’s, data provided in the article “The Case Against High School Sports” shows that high school athletics takes away funding from already failing academic programs; therefore, it should not have priority over academics.

Schools will hire a less qualified teacher, just so they can get the better coach for an athletic team with the money they didn’t use to hire the best teacher possible. In order to learn effectively I’ve learned that you need a teacher who honestly cares about their work and who they are teaching. However, you also need up to date textbooks and materials, which a large amount of schools do not have which increases the difficulty of learning and teaching.
