With the pressures of peers come the pressures of sex. More and more of America’s youth are becoming sexually active and less and less of this youth use a form of sexual protection. Unprotected sex may lead to an unwanted pregnancy, and in turn, abortion. This does not pertain only to teenage pregnancies but adult pregnancies as well. Women on all ages are choosing to abort for various reasons such as financial instability, emotional instability, and even shame. Although abortion is becoming a ubiquitous and popular practice for an unplanned pregnancy, it is not the solution.
Abortion has more potential hazards than benefits and this medical procedure should be banned and made illegal. Abortion is an inhumane for of murder and immoral to the developing fetus. This medical procedure does not give an unwanted child a chance at life, therefore “almost 1 out of 4 American babies are aborted” (Bender, David and Bruno Leone 28) Abortion does not grant the child a say in his or her future. It takes away his or her life without considering the child’s potential. Abortion has become so common that “every year in America, 1. million abortions are performed. This statistic has been used to portray abortion as a modern-day Holocaust… Each abortion kills an unborn child… Just as the Jewish Holocaust in Nazi Germany was legal but morally wrong, abortion is legal buy not moral” (Bender, David and Bruno Leone 27) Like the Holocaust, abortion kills a significant number of innocent children. The Holocaust is viewed as mass murder and if abortion can be depicted as a present day Holocaust, it considered as mass murder as well. Abortion is murder in the most inhumane fore.
In methods such as dilation and curettage, “the cervix is dilated or stretched to permit the insertion of a loop shaped steel knife. The body of the baby is cut up into pieces and removed and the placenta is scraped off the uterine wall” (Abortion: Some Medical Facts). Just the though of slicing a fetus into pieces is inhumane. Intentionally doing this to one’s own child is wrong. Some may argue that the fetus technically has no developed nerves to feel this pain, but it is no excuse for this murder. A life is deliberately being taken away and although a fetus has not matured into a full infant, it is still life. Moreover from that moment of conception, the child continues to develop and to grow… From that the ovum is fertilized a life has begun, which neither that of the father nor the mother; it is rather a live of a new human being with his [or her] own growth” (Bender, David and Bruno Leone 71). There is something alive within the mother’s womb when a sperm fertilizes an egg. A life is being created in the form of a baby. It is immoral to end a life of an unborn child who has no choice. It is like taking away the child’s right to live and breathe.
It is cruel for a mother to choose to abort, to choose to kill her own child growing inside of them. Therefore, abortion is wrong and should be made illegal. Mothers of an unplanned pregnancy always have the option of adoption. In “an open adoption permits the birth mother to select her child’s adoptive parents. A closed adoptions, meanwhile, results in the birth mother relinquishing all rights over the child and allows a state administrative agency to conduct the selection process” (Adoption LII/Legal information Insistute). These two types of adoption enable the mother to have even more alternatives to abortion.
Furthermore, there are several other types of adoption such as public, private, kinship, stepparent, transracial and intercountry/international. In choosing adoption, the mother is saving her child while giving he or she to someone else who will provide the child with a better life. Not only is the child gaining from adoption but the mother benefits as well. In adoption, “there is no cost to the [biological mother if she chooses it]. In fact, pregnancy-related expenses are paid for by the adoptive family, which often include medical care and living expenses.
Examples may include: rent, utilities, maternity clothing, food, prenatal vitamins and any other medical expenses not covered by [her] insurance” (Adoption Vs. Abortion Vs. Parent). As mentioned before, a mother is giving up her child for the better of the child. If the mother decides to put the baby up for adoption, the mother only wants what is best. She only wants to give the child a life where the child can grow up in a healthy environment. Women who are not financially stable are more likely to be in this situation. Their mindset is that children are very expensive to raise and it is true.
Adoption relieves the cost of that, permitting the mother to go through birth instead of killing her own child. Moreover, “openness benefits all involved. It allows an adopted child to go on with life and development without mysteries as to their birthparents, brothers or sisters, health history, and genetic roots. It solidifies the adopted child’s relationships, as they know that the people who are raising them are their true life-long parents. They will feel more secure in their family and home, while having the comfort of other special people in their life, from aunts and uncles to birthparents.
Without unnecessary mysteries or secrets for all parties, lives can go on more peacefully” (Independent Adoption Center- Open Adoption Facts). In choosing the adoptive parents, the mother will feel confidant about who will raise her child. She makes the decision on who to trust and who would support her child best. This in turn improves the child’s future. Not only will he or she be provided with a more stable life, he or she will learn how to trust his or her adoptive parents. This shows that adoption is a better option than abortion.
These two choices share similarities such as “[the mother] can pursue earlier goals, [she] can live independently, [she] will avoid being forced into a hasty marriage or relationship, [and if she is] a teenager, [she] can resume [her] youthful lifestyle” (Adoption Vs. Abortion Vs. Parenting). Although abortion and adoption can be compared, in adoption “[her] pregnancy ends with giving life [unlike death in abortion], [the mother] can feel good and positive about [her] choice whereas [she] may feel guilt and shame about her choice [in abortion], and [she] will remember giving birth while [after abortion she] will remember taking a life. The mother] will have plenty of time to plan [her and her] baby’s future [during adoption] but abortion is final; [she] can’t go back on [her] decision. [She] can hold, name, and love [her] baby [after birth] but in contrast, [she] will never know or treasure [her] baby [after abortion]” (Adoption Vs. Abortion Vs. Parenting). Adoption is always a more virtuous choice than abortion considering these differences. Abortion is not always guaranteed to be a safe procedure. Effects of abortion can be detrimental to the mother’s mental and physical health.
There are many complications during abortion such as cervix damage. This is just a hazard of one method of abortion. When inducing the abortion pill, “even when used under close medical supervision, the women using RU 486/prostaglandin combination [a drug used in the process of abortion] often experience a host of troubling side effects: severe pain, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, excessive thirst, and heavy bleeding… There have also been documented cases of heart attacks and even deaths” (Bender, David and Bruno Leone 124).
Usually, the gynecologists who perform the abortions tone down these effects by stating the pain feels like a woman on a heavy menstrual cycle but it is much more painful. The doctors fabricate this because it influences mothers to choose abortion. The mothers will believe that the pain is not excruciating and abortion will solve their unplanned pregnancy. The most dangerous is that “the 50 percent risk increase revealed by the studies means that women face a higher risk of eventually dying from the effects of abortion than of dying in childbirth” (Bender, David and Bruno Leone 125).
It is more risky to abort rather than give birth. Many abortions lead to complications, especially illegal abortions. When women go through these illegal abortions, the chance is high that they will receive serious side effects, the most common being heavy bleeding. These abortions are unsafe to the mother’s health. One of them, “trauma, known as post-abortion syndrome is a common reaction to abortion” (Bender, David and Leone 126). This is the unexplainable grief that sinks that comes into realization when mothers kill their child.
Mothers will go through a depression because of this. They will never know what their child could have looked like or how their child would have grown up. They cannot change an abortion and this decision is “set in stone”. Mothers will grieve for their unborn baby and this has caused serious pain to their mental health. Thus, abortion is more deleterious than beneficial and should be banned. Abortion is a caustic process that yields more negative effects than positive. It is a procedure that needs to be prohibited in the United States.
This is important because, as previously stated it is immoral and wrong. It is not right to end an innocent child’s life for the mother’s sake. The child needs a voice and that voice is saying no to abortion. A substantial amount of children are being killed each year, 1. 5 million in America to be exact. Those children are the future of America. The mothers will pass away in the future and those children will be the new mothers or fathers. These unborn children hold the potential of this country and their lives should not be taken away.
For example, the mother’s child could grow up to be a prominent figure who made an impact on the world. It is unjust to abort their lives and take away their choice.
