Lake’s Balsam war memorial (my local WWW memorial) Task 3- Words and Pictures The Mini Way, by Paul Nash shows a landscape that was probably once a Rene forest destroyed and ruined by the shells and bombs that were constantly going off during battle. It shows soldiers trudging through the mud filled with corpses, barbed wire, dead trees, and the remnants Of trenches. It shows the destruction of nature as a result of humans fighting. My story, by Alan Brazier “Jack joined the army at the age of sixteen they sent him to war, to a place he’d never seen.
To fight the Germans, Turks and with the French, now sitting in mud, in a crowded trench. Thousands waiting to go out and fight, hoping it will be over, before daylight. Over the top they went, when the orders came, scared young men, who don’t know who to blame. In seconds they fell, and lay there dying, those left alive you could hear them crying. Hundreds lay dead, in those first few minutes, had no escape from those German bullets. Those who refused, faced the firing squad, nothing left now, only to face their God.
When the firing stopped, the General said, now go out and get the lame and the dead. Those badly injured, Were all left to sigh, hoping to get home, before they die. The rest were left there, to try and survive, having to kill the enemy, to stay alive. For weeks we fought, in that forsaken place, eating and drinking, with blood on our face. No where to wash, amid that awful smell, life in the trenches, was just bloody hell. Now the war’s over, I’ve been back and seen, the graves of soldiers, aged only eighteen. Was lucky, I’ve been able to grow old, to my son this Story I told. This is an effective piece of writing because it uses sensory imagery to put the image of what they are going through and what they can see, smell and feel. It shows the brutality of the war, and shows that if you didn’t go over the top f the trench to basically die, the firing squad would shoot you and you would die, so all you could do is hope you weren’t shot when going over the top. All of this happening to a boy who joined the army at sixteen is stunning. Task 4- Weapons and Technology The Tank- Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages: It could act as a moving shield for infantry. It could provide heavy covering fire.
It can clear the way for infantry and other vehicles -Tanks could act as a moving shield for normal ground troops- if troops needed to quickly get from cover to cover they could call in a tank to get Enid and move from position to position. -Tanks can provide heavy cover fire and were like a mobile, armored artillery gun. They could stop the enemy firing at the friendly side by making the enemy flee or duck for cover. Tanks could clear a path for other vehicles and ground troops. Since tanks could take quite a lot of fire without much happening, they could barge through an area and clear out pockets of enemies as they went.
Disadvantages: 1 . They were slow and thus vulnerable to anti-tank weapons 2. They were inaccurate 3. It could cross only certain kinds of terrain. Tanks were slow which meant that once anti- tank weapons were created they were very vulnerable to them because of what a big, easy and slow target they Were. -Tanks had Very low accuracy and next to no aiming system, so even though they fired explosive shells and rocket propelled grenades sometimes they missed so badly that the explosive radius didn’t have any effect. -Tanks could only cross relatively flat terrain, and only across grass, mud or occasionally rocks.
If a tank went on to terrain to steep to handle it could flip over and be useless and stuck. The Biplane- advantages and disadvantages Airplanes made it possible to spot enemies from far away -Airplanes were mainly for reconnaissance but could drop hand-held bombs onto enemy positions -Airplanes could have mounted Lewis guns paired with a gunner on the back of the plane to execute “ground strafes”, in which the plane swooped near to the ground and the gunner would spray bullets everywhere. Disadvantages: -Airplanes were slow and had very limited fuel capacity, meaning they couldn’t fly far and they couldn’t do it quickly. Airplanes had hardly any passenger capacity and were, in early development, extremely cramped. Later developed airplanes’ mounted Lewis guns had very poor accuracy so were only effective at short range. The Flamethrower- advantages and -Flamethrowers could be used on tanks to melt the guns of them or even explode them Disadvantages: -Soldiers carrying flamethrowers could be hurt by the flamethrower- either by loss of control of the fire or if the person carrying the fuel backpack was shot and their backpack exploded.
Mustard Gas and Chlorine- advantages and -It was cheap and generally effective- it could wipe out trenches of enemies in short period of time and was quite stealthy Disadvantages: -It was dependent on the weather- if the wind was blowing towards you as you used in on an enemy it could blind and even kill your own men, so it could only be used if they were sure there was going to be no strong wind that day.
