Argumentative Essay On Pirates And Explorers

Tam arguing that pirates and explorers are the same. Some reasons that shows they are alike is simply, how society has portrayed them how we think and how movie/book show that pirates are evil and manipulative and explorers are brilliant and heroic. Another reason they are alike is there greed, there has been many times that explorers and their greed has taken over. The last reason is what they’ve done, and how both of them have done horrible things. These are the three reasons why | think that pirates and explorers are alike.

Firstly, is how society has portrayed/romanticized them through movie/shows and who we see them. Just like captain Jack sparrow in Pirates of the caribbean. In the movie he is romanticised, everything he does is made out to be cool. Running from the law, stealing, but everything he does a normal pirate would do. “Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the main heroes in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series by Disney – though he is more accurately described as a true anti-hero since he embodies the ideals of a true pirate” (Captain Jack Sparrow. ” Heroes Wiki. N. p. , n. d. Web. 03 May 2016. )

There’s a lot more examples on how pirates are romanticised but they also do the same for explorers just like Christopher Columbus and how he has is own holiday “Columbus Day is a U. S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century but did not become a federal holiday until the 1937. ” (Google. ” Google. N. p. , n. d. Web. 10 May 2016. ) I think that make wso sense because of all the stuff he has done.

In fact Christopher did not discover that the earth was round but ancient greeks did around the year 500 B. C “If he did, he was about 2,000 years too late. Ancient Greek mathematicians had already proven that the Earth was round, not flat. ” (Top 5 Misconceptions About Columbus, LiveScience. Tech Media Network, n. d. Web. 10 May 2016. ) He also would torture Natives if they didn’t find enough gold but he would also make them dig for gold in a spot where there was none “Columbus wrote in his diary. ‘They do not carry arms or know them…. They should be good servants.

The natives were soon forced into slavery, and punished with the loss of a limb or death if they did not collect enough gold” (Myint, B. “Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain? ” Bio. com. A&E Networks Television, 12 Oct. 2015. Web. 11 May 2016. ) Christopher columbus would trade unfairly with natives and/or shipped them off to spain to become slaves. Another reason is Blackbeard, he is the modern day image of what a pirate should act and look like. Everyone was scared of Blackbeard but why wasn’t anyone scared of Lord amherst, who put small pox into Indians blankets.

The image Blackbeard created is something that we think is something interesting and how the reputation he has is cool, and that many people think that he’s not evil. “Personally, I have immense respect for Blackbeard. He takes the easy way out and betrays tho ose who trust him just to get what he /wants, but his amazing plans and his ideas on a man’s dreams are more important. He just takes advantage of his opportunities. On whether he’s evil or not, I would say he’s not. We don’t know his true intentions, but he does everything for a purpose, for his dream.

If his dream is to become the pirate king, I would say he isn’t evil. ” (do you think blackbeard is cool or evil, reddit. com, 11 May 2016) There so many examples on people that think blackbeard is cool but what about him that he was a thief, murderer? Lastly theres Marco Polo. Marco Polo was from Venice Italy, he traveled from europe to asia and infact he was one for the first to do so, but he has a game named after him ” his family searching for him and calling his name “Marco”. Because of this, he began to respond to those cries with “Polo”.

It turned out that Marco Polo was actually hallucinating and they were not calling him even though he was later found by his family” (“Marco Polo the Game. ” The Travels of Marco Polo. N. p. , n. d. Web. 11 May 2016. ) Why do we do all those amazing things for people that have still done something horrible or why do we romances them it’s all because of what we’ve been taught or what we’ve read. I didn’t know that christopher columbus didn’t discover that the world was round because I was told he did. That’s one of my reasons why pirates and explorers are alike.
