What I mean by social leveling is that when students are in uniform everyone looks the same no matter what their economic background is. A lot of times students from low income families are teased and ridiculed by students from wealthier backgrounds because of the clothing they wear or can’t afford to wear. This type of teasing and bullying can be greatly reduced if not completely eradicated if all students are wearing uniforms.
Another reason I believe that uniforms in public schools is a good idea is because it deters bullying. When students are in uniform there is less chance for bullies to single out certain students because of the clothing they are wearing. If all students are wearing the same thing then there is no way for bullies to use clothing as a way to target certain students.
The last reason I believe that uniforms in public schools is a good idea is because it saves families money. Families who can’t afford to buy their children the latest fashion trends or name brand clothes don’t have to worry about it as much if their children are required to wear uniforms. Also, parents who have more than one child can save even more money by buying uniforms in bulk or hand-me-downs from older siblings.
Though there are some parents and students who are against uniforms in public schools, I believe that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Social leveling, deterring bullying, and saving families money are all excellent reasons to support uniforms in public schools. Let’s make our schools a better place by supporting the use of uniforms in public schools.

According to what I’ve read in texts, polls, and conversations with parents and students, they felt that school uniforms were not a significant social leveler.
The majority of the students that I surveyed and spoke with said they felt more comfortable and confident in their own skin when they did not have to worry about what others thought of their clothing.
Some parents feel that uniforms take away from a child’s individuality. However, I believe that uniforms allow children to focus on their studies and coming together as one school, rather than worrying about what everyone is wearing. One way to look at it is, if everyone is wearing a uniform, then no one stands out because of their clothing. So in a sense, uniforms level the playing field for all students.
Another concern among parents is the cost of uniforms. However, many schools offer financial assistance for families who cannot afford uniforms. Additionally, some families may be able to find uniforms at second-hand stores or through other resources.
