Two Kinds By Amy Tan Analysis Essay

“Never compromise your culture because you are your culture”. In the short story “Two kinds” by Amy Tan, The Red Headed Hawaiian by Chris McKinney, and The Biography of Frida Kahlo by Hayden Herrera, Jing Mei, Rudy Puana, and Frida Kahlo reveals how culture informs the way you view others and the world because it defines their perspectives, boundaries, and life experiences. “Two kinds” by Amy Tan is about Jing Mei and her mother with a relationship of complexities due to the different opinions they have.

Jing Mei’s mother believes that America is the land of opportunity and she pushes her daughter to become a prodigy while Jing Mei believes she cannot be anyone but herself. “Only two kinds of daughter, those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind! Only one kind of daughter can live in this hous. Obedient daughter” she shouted in chinese. “Then I wish I wasn’t your daughter, I wish you weren’t my mother” (Chunk 6 paragraph 11, 12). As a Chinese immigrant Jing Mei’s mother gets the idea from television shows and magazines and she does not question the validity of these sources.

She meanswhile pushes her daughter to be the best but on the other hand Jing Mei cannot see the value of showing dedication to her mother’s goal, practicing a skill, or collaborating with her mother’s plan because they are both separated by a factor; Culture. After her mother’s death she gains insight into her mother’s underlying motives. In addition Rudy Puana learned to be true in spite of his difficulties in life. In the novel The Red Headed Hawaiian by Chris McKinney reveals how Rudy Puana overcomes adversity and how he endeavors to achieve his ultimate goal by the reason of how his culture informs his viewpoint.

After growing up in an impoverished town, Rudy realizes that in the wake of making bad decisions he decides to become a doctor. He slowly becomes aware that he would have work extra hard and make sacrifices in one of the two ways he’s been taught. The Hawaiian way. “I ate like him and studied and studied like him. No magic bullet, no gifted intelligence, just hard work( page 70). Being Native Hawaiian, I felt a justifiable paranoia and worried that was more susceptible than most. Rudy begins to learn that being different is good and how he does everything the Hawaiian way(hard work, putting others first, and love for the place and family) isn’t something he should be ashamed of. In the same way Frida Kahlo also different opinions on life based on her culture. In The Biography of Frida Kahlo, Frida Kahlo consistently express herself in way people thought that was rebellious and dramatic. Growing up during the Mexican Revolution, Frida was left painting herself suffering that reflected her cultural nationalism of her time.

She also develop her own rebellious traits and awareness. “I paint my own reality. The only thing | know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint always whatever that passes through my head, without any consideration”. Her art was some of the most original and dramatic imagery of the twentieth century. (Paragraph 4). This reveals an expression nationalism and radicalism. Frida Kahlo also embraced and lived a life she wanted to without caring about other people’s thoughts. To sum up, Culture does inform the way you view others and the world.

Although opponents believe that culture does not inform the way you view, because they believe culture is different and each individual is affected by it differently.
