There are many factors that contribute to the development of an individual’s body image. With the ever-growing popularity of social media, the way in which we view ourselves has been completely transformed. In today’s society, it is not uncommon for people to compare their own appearance to the unrealistic standards set by celebrities and influencers. As a result of this constant comparison, many individuals develop body image issues.

Women are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of social media. In general, women are more likely than men to compare themselves to others and feel dissatisfaction with their own appearance. Studies have shown that spending time on social media can exacerbate pre-existing body image issues and lead to the development of new ones.

There are a number of ways in which social media can impact women’s body image. First, social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook often feature images of celebrities and influencers with perfect bodies. These images can give people the impression that everyone else is thin and flawless, leading them to feel inferior about their own bodies.

In addition, social media allows people to edit and filter their photos before posting them online. This gives people the ability to create an “perfect” version of themselves, which can further contribute to body image issues. When people compare their own bodies to these edited images, they often feel even worse about themselves.

Finally, social media can have a negative impact on mental health, which can in turn lead to body image issues. What is the ideal body type? The concept of a perfect physique has developed alongside the expansion of civilizations over time. In various parts of the world, the right body size and form varies. Body image concerns have a variety of negative consequences, including unhealthy preoccupations, bullying on social media, and distinct ways that contemporary American society views ideal men and women.

The Human Body

The human body is a beautiful thing. Each person has their own unique features that make them who they are. However, in today’s society, people are often judged by their appearance rather than their personality. It seems as if social media has taken over the way people view themselves and others. Social media platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter have given people a false sense of what an “ideal” body looks like. People are constantly comparing themselves to others which can lead to unhealthy obsessions and eating disorders.

Eating Disorders

Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder are all types of serious eating disorders that can develop from having negative body image. These disorders often lead to long-term physical and psychological problems. People with eating disorders are obsessed with food and their weight.

They see themselves as overweight even when they are not. This causes them to either starve themselves or binge and purge. Bingeing and purging is when someone eats a large amount of food and then tries to get rid of it by throwing up or using laxatives. People with anorexia nervosa have a fear of gaining weight so they severely restrict the amount of calories they consume each day. Bulimia nervosa is similar to anorexia in the sense that people with bulimia are also afraid of gaining weight. However, people with bulimia will eat large amounts of food and then purge.

The American Culture

In the United States, the ideal body type for women has changed drastically over the years. In the late 1800s, the hourglass figure was in style. This meant that women had a small waist and fuller hips and breasts. In the 1920s, the ideal body type changed to a more slender figure. This was due to the rise in popularity of fashion models like Twiggy who had very thin bodies.

In the 1950s, the ideal body type was once again an hourglass figure. This was thanks to actresses like Marilyn Monroe who were considered to be sex symbols. Today, the ideal body type for women is a slim and toned figure. Women are often photoshopped to look thinner and have perfect skin.

Men’s ideal body types have also changed over the years. In the early 1900s, men were considered to be attractive if they were muscular and had a slim waist. This was due to the popularity of athletes at this time. In the 1950s, men’s ideal body type shifted to a more average build with less muscle definition. This was thanks to actors like James Dean who became popular during this time. Today, the ideal body type for men is a muscular and toned figure. Men are often photoshopped to look bigger and have more defined muscles.

Social media is commonly utilized to spread information, share photos, and communicate with friends, but cyberbullying is the most prevalent thing seen on social networking sites. According to the British Dictionary, bullying is defined as “the act of hurting, persecuting, or terrifying weaker people” (British Dictionary).

It has been found that women are commonly the victims of bullies and social media plays a big role in it. Social media has been around for many years, but what many people do not know is that it can have a negative effect on people, especially women. Studies show that fifty-one percent of girls feel sad or depressed after looking at pictures on social media (Hilton). In addition, eighty percent of girls feel bad about their bodies after looking at these images (Hilton).

The Human Body Image is defined as “perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs that people hold about their own physical appearance” (Thompson). So basically, how we see ourselves in the mirror. Social media can have a huge impact on our view of ourselves. Every day, we are bombarded with images of “perfect” celebrities and models. We see these women with their perfect hair, skin, and bodies and we compare ourselves to them. It is no wonder that so many young girls have body image issues.

While social media can have a negative effect on women`s body image, it can also be used to spread positive messages about body acceptance. For example, the popular hashtag #LoveYourLines celebrates stretch marks, which are something that many women are self-conscious about. This movement started on Instagram and has since spread to other social media platforms. The goal of this campaign is to show women that their stretch marks are beautiful and that they should love their bodies just the way they are.
