Once Pluto was out of tears to cry with, he knew it was time to tell her. “My darling Proserpina I think it’s time for you to return to your mother. ” “No, why would you say such a thing!? You can yell and scream as loud as you want but, I know that you miss her and that there are times that you cry at night. You should go to her … be with your mother. ” Proserpina interrupts but is interrupted. “But what about … ” “I’ll be fine. I can still watch over you from underneath. ” “That’s not the point. But I must ask will you do anything for me? ” “Proserpina with not a hint of doubt or hesitation looked straight into Pluto’s eye. And uttered a single a word. “Yes. ” “Then my dear to be with me and to be with your mother; I ask of you to eat something. ” Pluto pulls out a lush, ripe red, pomegranate, he took both hands upon the fruit alternating both hands in different directions, and he gave the pomegranate twist. Then he tightens grip on the pomegranate it with a swift motion he pulled the pomegranate apart in half sending droplets of juice and a few seeds flying from the fruit.
He put down one-half and the other he plucks a single red seed handing it to Proserpina. “Here with this, you can stay with me for at least a month out of the year. ” She stares at the seed for a moment without a word. Proserpina shook her head and gently push Pluto’s hand away. Smiling she took the other half from the ground and said. “We are two halves of a whole. So I will be with you for a half. ” From the pomegranate, she ate a seed than another till she reached 5. And before Pluto knew what was happening Proserpina had already eaten 6 seed from the pomegranate.
Resulting in Proserpina now having to stay in the world for six months out of the year. Pluto still stock as to what that has just transpired before him; he sat mouth halfopen of surprise, panic, and delight. Seeing as his pure Proserpina has now imprisoned herself in the underworld for 6 months out of each year for all eternity. Pluto was now filled with dread and delight, for now, he can be with his love; but also the fear of Ceres wrath as to the news of her daughter. Nether the less the damage was done and the time to bring Proserpina back to her mother was drawing ever closer, for they were to meet the day after next.
Mindful of such a fact, the two spent what little time they had together wisely. Walking through the Garnet castle one last time as well as looking upon the garden of flowers made of jewels and the newly bloomed flowers that Proserpina grew for Pluto. Sleeping in each other’s arms. Joined at the hip throughout the day talking to no one but one another. The time went by so quick – yet was still in the world of Proserpina and Pluto. Until the day came for Proserpina to leaving. At the entry of the underworld, Ceres stood waiting and pacing, nerve-rackingly excited to be reunited with her darling beloved daughter once again.
Ceres’s excitement brought forth prosperity across the land, as the snow began to slowly melt away and the Northern wind nearly come to a cease. The end of a long and terrible winter has just begun. For now, the ground had started to tremble, shake, and crack. Meaning that the time has finally come for Proserpina to return. Ceres flew into the air to watch the entrance of the underworld open. The earth shook more violently as it started to crack in two. Through the opening in the earth came a rumbling sounding like that of the tramp of horses’ hoofs and the rattling of wheels.
She soon saw a team of four black sable horses, snorting smoke out of their nostrils, and tearing their way out of the earth with a splendid golden enflamed chariot whirling at their heels. They leaped out of the entrance, chariot and all; and there they were hand & hand Pluto and Proserpina. The two walked out of the chariot still holding hands. There they stand in front of Ceres without a saving a word. Till Proserpina broke into tears letting go of Pluto’s hand and rush into her mother’s arms. Proserpina buried in her mother’s bosom and through her sobs conveyed to Ceres “Oh mother *sniff* I missed you *sniff*so much *sniff*.
Ceres wrapping her arms around Proserpina, tears in eyes held h close for the first time in so long. All the while as Pluto stood in silence with no intention to interrupt the reunion between the two. Ceres still teary eyed put her hand on Proserpina’s face to look right into at her daughter’s eyes to say “Oh my sweet girl I am so glad to have you back. I shall never let you out of my sight again. ” Pulling Proserpina closer to her. “Nothing will ever separate us. ” Proserpina knowing the truth, looked at Pluto with a concerned face conveying through her eyes for help from him.
Pluto just nodded his head and gestured meaning it was time to tell her. Proserpina lifted her head and separated herself from her mother; with a sigh, “About that mother … when l – when I – when I was in the underworld I kind of… I kind of ate something. Please do be upset! ” proceeding what Proserpina had said Ceres just tilted her head till the realization of what has been said hits her. “What are you saying, my child, how could you have eaten something? What is that you could have eaten to keep you in such a place. ” “Mother it’s not like I’ll be there forever.
I only ate 6 pomegranate seed. Proserpina said with a sincere voice. “No, a minute there is still too long. But for 6 months! There is nothing I can say that can express the misery that it brings me. You are now bound to that hole for all eternity” Proserpina worried for her mother sake “Mother is not all that bad down there. There are many lovely things and I will definitely not be lonely” she smiled at Pluto as she said it. Ceres then gave Pluto a look made up of disgust and with a low rough voice “This- this is all your fault! If you hadn’t had kidnapped her none of this would have happened! And I still would have had my little girl!
I should have Jupiter rain judgment on you! ” Stopping Ceres from hurting Pluto Proserpina stepped up “No! You can’t do that. Don’t hurt him! ” “Step on of the way child he does not desert such mercy. ” Ceres said angrily. Proserpina rebuttal “No you can’t I won’t let you! ” “Why do you protect him, my girl? ” “Because I love him! And I wanted to be with him so that is why I ate the fruit!.. So that I could be with both of the people that I love. I know it’s selfish of me. But I love him and I love you, mother. ” Hearing her daughter’s answer Ceres slumped over. Unable to reply out of fear that she would hurt her daughter.
After a while Ceres stood up straight looked at Proserpina in the eyes “If that is what you wish. And if you truly love him there is nothing I can do to stop you… But doesn’t mean in completely approve of the two of you! ” A smile grew on Proserpina’s face as she looked at Pluto and ran and hugged her mother tightly. “Thank you, thank you. You know | love you mother and that will never change. ” Holding Proserpina Ceres said, “I love you too my sweet girl. ” Ceres look at Pluto “Don’t you dare ever hurt my daughter. ” Pluto taken aback for a second reposed back firmly “I will never dream of a thing. ” Ceres and Proserpina smiled.
Ceres now said to her daughter “If you are to spend 6 months in the underworld. Then for 6 months the world will be covered in ice and snow till Proserpina’s return. For then the world will bloom again for your return. ” It was now time to say goodbye for the time being. Pluto got aboard his golden chariot, waved goodbye to Proserpina and rode away into the bottomless pit into the underworld. While Ceres and Proserpina watch Pluto disappear, the earth closed as if it never even happened. The two women then walked away back to their home. All to wait 6 months till Proserpina was to return to Pluto’s kingdom.
