Abortion: A Good Alternative to Pregnancy?

Do you know what the world has too much of? It’s humans that the world has too many of. Yet every day, many women are soul denied access to abortion. With abortion, women will never have to face the haunting feeling of being forced to have a child. Abortion should be legally allowed in all fifty states, because not only does it provide freedom and choice for the parent, but it benefits the child as well. Abortion is the stopping of pregnancy, either through a miscarriage or artificially induced, by the removal of the fetus or embryo from the uterus” (O’Brien). There are two sides on the abortion debate, pro-choice, who support abortion, and pro-life, who do not. Pro-choice supports believe that women should have the freedom and the choice of having a child, and that a woman should not be forced to have a child. Pro- life supporters believe that abortion is unethical, because “every abortion kills an innocent human being’ (Abortionists. Mom). Some people believe that abortion is unethical, and should not be allowed. Preface supporters believe “every abortion kills an Innocent human being” (Abortionists. Com). They also believe that “the 8 week* unborn baby feels eel physical pain during an abortion” (Abortionists. Com). They feel this way, because they believe that “a mammal’s life begins when the sperm from the father unites with the egg from the mother” (Harrison). Although there is life In a fetus, a fetus is not a human.

Abortion is terminating pregnancy, not a human life. According to Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, PhD, fetus cannot feel pain during an abortion. Some pro-life supporters also believe that abortion Is against the will of God, because The Sixth Commandment of the Bible’s Old Testament states that “thou shall not ill” (Exodus 20: 13). Therefore, performing an abortion counts as killing, and is against the will of god. This is wrong because “religious ideology should not be a foundation for law in the united States” (Procom. Org). Although there are some negative sides of abortion, the positive sides greatly outweigh them. Unlike popular belief, abortion Is a very safe procedure. According to a publication of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist, the death rate of Induced abortions Is less than one In 100,000. This Is very low compared to the death rate of giving birth, which is 12. Out of 100,000 (Amnesty International). The risk of death from giving birth is greater than the risk of death from an abortion procedure.

Abortions do not reduce the rate of fertility in women. According to a study of 10,767 women by the Royal College of General Practitioners and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist, women who have done two previous abortions have the same fertility rates as women who have naturally given birth two times (Frank). Not only is abortion a safe procedure, it gives women more freedom. Women should have the choice of giving birth. Not only does an abortion benefit the woman, but it can relieve the child from lifelong disabilities.

According to the March of Dimes Pregnancy and Newborn Health Education Center, Fragile X syndrome, the most common genetic form of mental retardation, affects about 1 In 4,000 males and 1 In 8,000 females. One In 800 babies have Down Syndrome, and one sentence their child for life with a severe disability. The child does not deserve to have to endure the lifelong problems that could have been prevented. Abortion saves children from lifelong disabilities and women from financial problems too. A Seep. 005 survey in the Journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health asking women why they had an abortion found that 73% of participants said they could not afford to have a baby, and 38% claimed giving birth would interfere with their education and career goals. Abortion protects women from harm to their futures and finances. Abortions should be legally allowed and accepted in the United States, because it plays a fundamental role in the freedom and future of women. Abortion is controversial because there are two sides: pro-choice and pro-life.
