I chose to do my topic on abortion. I chose abortion because it is a very controversial subject for Just about everyone. Whether someone Is for or against abortion there are always going to be pros and cons of the matter. Abortion Is defined as many things such as the termination of a pregnancy resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus; spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation; induced expulsion of a human fetus; and expulsion of a fetus often due to infection at any time before completion of pregnancy.
Abortion is en of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States every year. Almost half of the unplanned pregnancies In the US end up with an abortion. The history of abortion goes back to the early American colonies. In the 1 offs abortion was forbidden in the fourth month of pregnancy. Well into the 19th century people were definitely against any sort of abortion. Some even considered abortion a misdemeanors if you had it after what they called feeling life, or ‘quickening.
In 1962, there was an organized effort toward making abortion legal, even though doctors had tried to organize an effort since 1933. Different religions had different feelings toward abortion. In ancient Greece and Rome Is was a common thing, The Church In the Council of Vienna viewed that abortion was homicide after the fetus was formed after the first trimester. Catholics were excommunicated if they considered abortion. In 1965, all the fifty states had banned abortion with some exceptions, such as rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life. In 1973, the case of Roe v.
Wade, declared the abortion laws unconstitutional. In as many as 30 countries abortion Is legal, while remaining countries have partial restrictions or a complete ban on abortion, unless he mother’s life Is in danger. While abortion Is controversial there are pros and cons. Some pros to abortion are of course to save the mother’s life, if a woman is raped or the victim of incest. Some think that if a mother is addicted to drugs or alcohol while pregnant that abortion would be the best option for the unborn baby. Some people pro choice would put up a good argument.
Some reasons include, teenage pregnancy, the ability for a woman to have control of her own body, that an abortion Is a safe medical procedure and doesn’t harm the woman and she can soul have the ability to get pregnant again. The life of the baby depends on the mothers health, if she can take care of the baby or not. Technology has been able to detect if the baby is going to have certain diseases, people think giving life to an unhealthy baby and watch it suffer is too much for some families to bear. Then there are abortion cons. Abortion appears to be an awful crime, some would call it murder. It is also denying someone a well deserved life.
When women get an abortion done It carries a risk of not being able to become pregnant again. Abortion can also lead to health complications and the worst case scenario would be the woman dying from he procedure. Women can have unwanted memories which could lead to stress and depression. Women often experience a feeling of guilt which lasts their entire lifetime. Abortion would be a lifetime of burden on the woman. There are a few types of procedures on how abortion can be done. A surgical abortion which is done by a procedure and medical abortion done with drugs, either a pill or a series of pills. Arterial vaginal delivery of a living fetus then killing the fetus and completing the delivery. This is done in most second and third trimester pregnancies. This method however was banned by the Supreme Court. The most popular landmark case to abortion is Roe v. Wade in 1973. Roe v. Wade is the historic Supreme Court decision in overturning the Texas interpretation of abortion law and making abortion legal in the United States. The Roe v. Wade decision held that a woman, with her doctor, could choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without restriction, and with restrictions in later months, based on the right to privacy.
In response to the Roe v. Wade, many states enacted or attempted to enact laws limiting or regulating abortions. Some laws were to require parental consent for minors to receive abortions, spouse mutual consent laws, notification to one’s spouse, and requiring abortions to be performed in hospitals and not clinics, requiring abortions to be performed in hospitals but not clinics, laws barring state funding for abortions, laws banning partial birth delivery, and laws requiring waiting periods before abortion, or laws mandating women read certain types of literature and watch a fetal ultrasound before undergoing an abortion.
In conclusion, I think it is the woman’s right to choose what she does to her body. If she was raped or addicted to drugs, I don’t think it’s under the best circumstance for a woman to have a baby. No matter what people say or think about abortion, women are still going to have abortions done and the matter is not going away anytime soon.
